No, replace the PSU. Sometimes they give false positive and run for a short bit before getting back to their old ways. Also that dust may be causing a short. Canned N2 and a vacuum helps, but cards may already be burned. Start with the PSU though.
Agreed. Get a quality PSU. Boot sector can be repaired, and it could well be W10 update. I self selected out of the workforce before Win7. I don't regret never encountering any other Windows Products after that.
That's what I was thinking when I brought it into the shop. I can get the right model online for not too much. Wish I'd had the guts to try it in the first place.
All those repair places are full of kids who think understanding some software language grants them the ability to repair hardware. They lose respect for the physical aspect, and end up wasting everyone's time and money. I never go to those places.
I'm still using Windows 7 Pro on my laptop. Have to watch it closely to keep it clean and well-defended, but at least I don't get random updates knocking me out of my work and locking me out of my system. And before anyone says I should upgrade anyway, the laptop I have is older and won't take Windows 10. Or so I've heard.
It will take Windows 10. 10 as far less processing requirements and overhead than Windows 7. 7 is awful because it's a memory hog.
But there are certain requirements Windows 10 has that 7 didn't and the installer simply won't run under certain conditions. Like for example, a hard drive formatted to FAT32 will be impossible to install on (though I think that was a problem with 7, as well). I personally can't install 10 on my laptop because the motherboard needs a bios update that apparently no longer exists.
Could have been replaced by a more functional BIOS update, otherwise, if you can find the exact number, there's quite a few software archives around with ancient updates. Just have to dig. Reddit work surprisingly well in this respect.
tbh given how cheap towers are second hand i wouldn't spend much money on trying to get it working if its old... there comes a point at which its cheaper to replace.
A bit of a political/social rant: Here we are in the middle of a major and growing pandemic and our state government, via a solid one-party majority in the legislature (I won't name it though it rhymes with "Pre-publican") has, against the wishes of the governor who is of the other party, and with the assistance of the State Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court, has refused to re-schedule today's election/primary and thereby made many of us choose whether to stand in line at the polls or forfeit our right to vote (as Justice Ginsburg said in her eloquent dissent). In the middle of the two weeks the government has described as the "Pearl Harbor" of the crisis, while urging people to stay home. Earlier the wife and I had decided to vote absentee and requested ballots, but they have not yet arrived. Under a federal court order (just reversed by the U.S. Supremes) we would have had a week to await, mark, and mail those ballots -- but now these ballots (which we have not yet received) must be postmarked by today or they won't be counted. So we must vote in person if we want to vote at all. Admittedly we could have requested those ballots earlier, but had intended to vote in person until recently, and did make a timely request under the rules then in place. It sucks. And in this stupid state, which has chosen to elect its judges in ostensibly non-party elections, the majority of the state supreme court and the legislature (and the US Supremes), are clearly in favor of one candidate, whose re-election will almost certainly be made more likely the harder it gets to vote -- because that party's supporters usually have more resources and are more likely to vote under any circumstances, with a very dedicated base. So, without, I hope, sounding like an aluminum-hat-wearing conspiracist, I smell a rat. It makes me sick (I hope not literally).
I had to go to the grocery store Sunday and when I got back home I could see a big ,brownish, yellow cloud of smoke in the yard behind mine. It was from our neighbor burning his brush. As soon as I got out of my car my throat burned and my chest started to hurt from the smoke. I was up all night with a cough, sore throat and chest pain. Of course, with this virus going around you can't help but think ,"Oh, my God, do I have it?" But, I knew it was from the smoke and it just really irked me this guy would let the burn get that bad. Really not happy about this.
I wish there was a way to just escape it all. Not having to feel like I need to be in two places at once, and just let the world go on it's happy way. Swear this stupid virus is gonna kill me without ever touching me, cause everybody seems to have turned into the neediest shit on the planet. It's like what the hell would they do if I hadn't moved back? Grrrrrrr!
As Joni Mitchell sang, "Don't it always seem to go That you don't know what you've got Till it's gone"
Oof... Rhode Island officially extended restaurant closures until May 8th. This isn't surprising. Nor will any further extensions be. I've had Monday May 18th in my head for a while, but still... hearing the governor announce it today was still a massive kick in the dick. How low can we go? In 2019, Homer's restaurant did roughly $350K in sales for the 8 weeks covering 3/15 to 5/8. In 2020, we are up about 4% in sales, so that translates into about $365K. However, the following three weeks that would take us into Memorial Day are all massive graduation weeks, with Brown University being the big one. Do you have any idea how much Ivy League parents spend for their kids' graduation celebrations? It's like Vikings raiding an unarmed gold mine. But whether we're open or not, all schools and graduation ceremonies are already canceled. That's another $100K on top of regular business. Call it an even half a million bucks this is going to cost us in expected revenue.
Well, we voted. The absentee ballots didn't come, so we went in person. I refuse to be manipulated out of a basic right -- I just wish it didn't carry the potential of capital punishment. Not that crowded but still surreal with everyone wearing masks so that it was hard to tell who were neighbors and all. Nice day for a walk.
I gave up today. Completely gave up. I'm not close to back to whatever normal this is, but I realized I haven't eaten in over 10 hours so I probably should do that.
Looking at the big water bottle I keep by my desk I realize that I didn't hit my hydration target yesterday. And the sixteen beers after work got canceled probably didn't help. ETA: Not really sixteen, it's just a number from a Dead Kennedys song I tend to use.
