So, my story has a bit of low-life characters who tend to spam particular words (for example F-word or the brown matter word). If the spam is not that serious (imo, I live in a place where vulgarisms are on the daily basis, in fact, the whole region is like this. Some people may be more sensitive towards that) and there is like 10 of them per 7k story, is it alright to post here (and by here I mean the workshop) or is it a complete taboo?
I'm not up on the standard practice, but I believe if there's explicit language in your stuff, you have to put a language warning at the top so people know in case they want to avoid it. I think you can still post stuff, just warn 'em.
I don't really see anything wrong with this - I'm not a moderator though. However I will say that while I don't think of myself as a prude, I can't take a story seriously if every other sentence has words like "shit", " crap", "damn", " fuck" - it's just too hard to see past all the language to the content of the story. I would ask, in your story is it absolutely vital that the "fuck" or the "shit" is in it? Because if it doesn't advance your story......what purpose does it serve exactly?
You can say faggot You can say nigger As long as you warn that it can trigger People are sensitive in these days Even if they aren't blacks or gays!
To help shape the personality of the character or the current mood. It can mean a lot if character says would you please go away, or F off. That example perhaps was a bit hyperbolic, but you catch my drift. Also, it can signal something to the careful reader. A person who is usually nice and neat, but then starts THE spam. Now then it is clear something has clicked. And then there is the believability. Everyone in the real life swears, if rarely or at all times, it would feel somehow unnatural (at least to me) if none of them ever dropped a single thing in a stressful situation (you have to love the traffic...).
It is usually meant along with the fact that the character turns into a machine gun, going ratatatatatatat of swearing.
