    Hello from the High Desert

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Scarlett_Rav, May 25, 2020.

I'm a mom, teacher, and master day-dreamer in the American Southwest. I've gone through bursts of writing in my life, and seem to be turning to it again during these quaran-times. In the past I have written young adult and literary fiction, now veering into erotica and fantasy because--fun! I look forward to being able to post and receive feedback on this forum.

Hi Scarlet, welcome from the low and mostly flat Midwest (though I live in a rather hilly area). The desert huh? Is it like on Breaking Bad? Or more like in the Road Runner, with anvils falling off plateaus everywhere?

    Welcome!

I lived in Colorado for 6 years and enjoyed the high desert but now I'm back in New England. I missed the eastern woodlands.

    I agree.
It’s fun writing them. And just as fun reading them.
A warm welcome to the forums, also!

Hi - it's Breaking Bad all the way! Though there are lovely wooded mountains nearby, and we literally see roadrunners every day. They are vicious beasts :)

Yes, and I would like to share! However, I was dismayed to read in the guidelines that work can never be removed from the site once posted. This makes me quite reluctant to post :(

Yes—commit yourself. What would be the point of posting something if you're just gunna remove it later? You're desert-tough—write it, post it, and let all the worry go.

    Hi Scarlett!

I’m one of the forum moderators, and I want to welcome you to the forum. I see you're from the picturesque Southwest. I've never been any further south than a brief ride through Utah (umm, okaaay) but I have friends living in both Arizona and New Mexico. I'd love to visit there someday, although that's probably never going to happen as I now live in Scotland. But both Arizona and New Mexico have so much that's unique to offer, and I know that New Mexico, in particular, is quite prolific when it comes to the arts in general. I can certainly think of less intriguing places to live. :) Glad to have you aboard.

In order to help you get oriented and get settled, here are a couple of links I strongly recommend that you read at the start, if you haven’t already. They will give you a good idea of how we operate here on the forum:

    New Member Quick Start

    Forum Rules

You will notice in the New Member Quick Start that in order to post your work in the Workshop area—the only area of the forum where you are allowed to post your work and ask for feedback—you will need to do at least two critiques for other people, in exchange for receiving feedback on one of your own pieces of work.

This site is designed around the concept of members helping each other out by ‘paying it forward’—through our two-for-one critique system. So do two critiques, THEN you can post something of your own. This advance 2:1 ratio lasts as long as your membership here—although it is your own responsibility to keep track of your own ratio. The software doesn't keep track of it for you, beyond your first two critiques.

In order to help you get started doing critiques, here is a link to a good article written by one of our former moderators: https://www.writingforums.org/threads/constructive-critiques.20627/

One of the popular areas of our forum is our contest section. There is a monthly contest running for Short Stories, Flash Fiction and Poetry. You can enter these ongoing contests, even as a new member. And we really encourage you to visit the site, read the current entries, and vote for your favourite when the voting period starts. This means a lot to the people who have written these entries. And it will also give you a good idea of what our members are capable of writing.
    https://www.writingforums.org/writing-contests/

While the Role Playing Game section is not new, it’s being given a revamp. So if you are interested in playing and writing Role Playing Games, you might want to visit this section and get in on the fun. https://www.writingforums.org/threads/resurrecting-the-dead-rpg-section-rebuild.165055/

I hope you have fun getting to know us and let us get to know you, via the posts you make. Please feel free to explore the forum. There is a lot under the hood. This site map might help you find your way around more quickly than the menu bars do, so feel free to use it. https://www.writingforums.org/faq/

If you encounter any difficulties, don’t hesitate to contact me or one of the other moderators, whose names appear in yellow at the bottom of the Community page. We will be glad to help.

    Again, welcome!

    Cheers for now,
    Jan

Hi Jan, thank you for the warm welcome! Question about the 20 posts total that we must have. Is there a place to track our interaction on our profile? (In other words, is it possible for me to see how many posts/comments I've made anywhere?) Thanks!

Actually, I think I just answered my own question. I'm guessing that"messages" number under our name next to a post indicates how many times we've posted? Sorry for the confusion!

Yes, that works. If you're wondering when you will become a full Member, though, our software takes care of that. Once you have made the 20 posts AND been here two full weeks, your status underneath your Username will change from New Member to Member. And once you have reached that mark AND done two full critiques in the Workshop, the software will allow you access to starting a thread in the Workshop.

However, it sometimes takes almost a full day for the software to catch up, so the change won't necessarily happen immediately. However, if a full day goes by and the software hasn't updated you, let us know! Occasionally it glitches.

Do be aware that the software does NOT keep track of your 2:1 critique ratio for subsequent Workshop threads. You need to keep track of that yourself, after you've gained your initial access. Try not to let yourself get behind on critiques, if you're planning to post in the Workshop more than once. :)

Sadly there are no snattlerakes in the part of the world I’m from. Come to think of it, no road runners either.

We’re deprived by this sort of wild-life. We’re... a sad sad city.

Love that! Saw it in a documentary years ago. Lots of stuff about animals finding creative ways to use humans. :)
