Come to think of it, I've seen birds sitting happily on hippos, rhinoceri, crocodiles. Never a tiger though.

Well no wonder birds won't sit on them! They cat-spazz!!

See now Graham, if you could get that under control...

Just figured it out. Rhinos, hippos and crocodiles probably can't feel them land.

In real-life, this bird is like those in the nature films that sit on the backs of hippos, eating nits and lice, and "steering" the hippos by nipping at their ears. He likes to sit or ride around on my shoulder and is not above nipping my ear or neck if I do something that irritates him, like unthinkingly brush him with my hand. He is not, as far as I know, looking for nits. I think and hope he would be disappointed..

All this talk about birds sitting on people (okay, mostly my talk) reminds me of a poem by Jacques Prevert, a post-WWII poet in Paris:

    Quartier Libre

I put my cap in the cage
and went out with the bird on my head
    So
    one no longer salutes
    asked the commanding officer
    No
    one no longer salutes
    replied the bird
    Ah good
excuse me I thought someone saluted
    said the commanding office
You are fully excused everybody makes mistakes
    said the bird.

Was thinking of a book title: "How (not) to punch your in-law(s): A beginners guide."

    Time for fun...

I totally read that as Jacques Pervert. Then I thought, I'm gonna like this poem.

There's an author who could have done with a pseudonym. Or maybe he knew what he was doing... ?

So you didn't like it? As Lawrence Ferlinghetti said, he's not for everyone.

I remember finding it in what used to be known as an "alternative" or "underground" bookstore, e.g. in the hippie part of town in the mid-60s. I will neither affirm nor deny that a misreading of the author's name is what first caught my attention. That and the fact that the poems were translated by Ferlinghetti and published by City Lights Books of San Francisco. And the idea that my parents would probably overlook the "coolness" and consider the book a waste of money ($1.00 new).

Mentioned your kale aspersions to my wife, as we sat down to grilled pork chops with a side of kale she had prepared, sauteed with oil and a bit of soy sauce (she's Chinese so always soy sauce) and some chicken broth. She disagreed with your assessment and told me to tell you so. I had to agree with her, even though I'm not much of a fan of sauteed greens.

I'm surprised. I like quite a few of the Chinese vegetables over kale, especially Chinese broccoli, bok choy, and most of all yu choy. But there are many others. Kale always had a kind of bitter taste to me.

I'd be eating that and wishing it was bok choy or red cabbage. Or broccolini or rabe. Or even tofu.

Nope... I got no use for kale.

Kale didn't even exist when I moved. Dunno if they sell it, half the time I don't know what I'm buying, but let me tell you that when you mistake mustard leaves for spinach it gives your morning smoothie one hell of a kick.
