So... I'm not sure how should I organize my "bookshelf", any suggestions??? Spoiler The books between The Witcher and Narnia are "Dragons of Ether: Witch Hunters" (I think this one doesn't have an English translation) and "The NeverEnding Story", after Narnia I have "The Children of Húrin", after The Guns of Navarone I have the "Popol Vuh" (Mayan mythology), "The Art of War" and "On the Origins of War and the Preservation of Peace", and the last book in Spanish is "Myths and Legends from Around the World". Ignore the mangas on the 2nd picture they are placeholders and will be replaced when I get my copy of "Voices from Chernobyl" (already on the way); I also have the Inheritance Cycle but I ran out of space. Thank you for reading this.
First billing for the Expanse books is most satisfactory. I've not read a series with that much velocity in quite some time. They move.
You could organize by height, so as not to have all the sudden drops and rises. I tend to do that, but always end up needing to put a short book in between tall ones or vise verse so as not to break up a set. ... And Animator's Survival Kit! hells yeah buddy!!
I've played with quite a few systems. I even once catalogued over 600 of the things in a giant spreadsheet, with indexing and a search engine. As this system slowly fell apart, I decided to group them vaguely by category, and remember. Now the groups have fallen... the shelves are confused. I walk up to a shelf, finding a book on crowd theory next to a sad autobiography. Brilliant. I have decided that the serendipity is far superior. I've also very recently started the peculiar habit of putting books I've read (or don't want to see for a few years) in boxes, so that only the unread ones remain. Nice collection, by the way! Are you planning to expand?
Nothing really, I just wanted to hear different opinions on how to organize both this particular set of books and just books in general. I like that idea, I'll try it out and see how it looks. That's really interesting... I don't think I will ever use it though, I like looking at my collection. Thank you, and yes I'm always looking for new books; the next one is likely to be either Dune or a German war memoir, and I'm still missing like 5 books in The Expanse series. Any suggestions??? P.S: Thank you all for taking the time to read and answer this.
The thing that helped me the most as far as being able to quickly locate a book, is I would take high res pictures of each bookshelf. I have a lot of them, literally in every room of the house except for the kitchen and bathroom. I first snapped pics of them as a way of showing someone online what books I have, rather than trying to list them all. Then one day I couldn't find something and did the forehead slap—Hey! I can check the pictures! Found it real quick, without having to leave my comfortable seat, and went straight to it. Of course, as they get shuffled around, you'll need to periodically take new pictures. Spoiler: A sample Books-9 by Darkmatters, on Flickr
I do hardbacks in one case, paperbacks in another due to size differential, and nonfiction and history books on another. All are alphabetized by author with the history books broken up by region/theme.
Novels, poetry/drama/short fiction, and nonfiction are my three main categories. History books chronological, Novels by title, and poetry/drama/short fiction generally by era.
In the future I'm probably going to implement a fusion of these two, right now I don't really have enough books or space to do it. Thank you for your time.
There was no "staging" of books, the good, the bad, and the ugly are all exactly where they were when I grabbed my phone.
Which blog? The WF one or my personal domain thingy that I never seem to update? But I do try to tread a fine line between mental compartmentalization and full-blown multiple personality disorder. You should see my personal Facebook page. Spoiler You'll never see my personal Facebook page.
I remember just a couple weeks ago JK Rowling posted those pictures of her library. She spent lockdown by organizing her books by colour alone...
This is by far my most optimized set up. I used to have four of these shelves, but two of them were falling apart, and I tossed about a hundred books after my last move. And I have two history book shelves upstairs in the closet. Utilizing the top of the shelves brought everything together.
