    NaNoWriMo NaNoWriMo 2020

Discussion in 'NaNoWriMo' started by A.S.Ford, Jun 26, 2020.

    Hey :)

Who else is planning on taking part in Camp NaNoWriMo this July? Since NaNoWriMo have merged their websites there seems to be only writing groups instead of our previous cabins but I was planning on making one all the same if anyone would like to join and attempt the challenge with me.

I will be working on a fantasy novel this time that I planned and thought out a few years ago (back in 2013, I just realised!) but only now have the time and motivation to blow the dust off the notebook and work on it again :) It focuses on magic, family, deceit, and self-worth. It is titled 'The Substance of Spirit' and it emphasises just that; the idea that the strength of one's spirit defines who they are and how they will face the challenges given them in life. There is a personal aspect to this story for me and it fuels a large part of my drive to finally write it :)

What are you planning on working on?

CAMP NANOWRIMO STARTS TOMORROW! - who else is excited??

Good Luck! Every NaNo challenge I have ever attempted succumbs to my short attention span and fails.

Thank you :) I've had that same experience to be honest but keeping my fingers crossed for this one, haha!

    Hey everyone,

Who else is planning on committing to NaNoWriMo in November this year?

I haven't managed to have a successful time writing, either in or out of the NaNo challenges that occur throughout the year, since I finished university 3 years ago :( I am determined to get a win this year, however, as I have had enough now! I will even be working on a new project for the first time in 3 years too so looking forward to it :)

My project this year is Bones and Dreams: a dark, quest, new adult fantasy novel filled with witches, pagan and druid influences, an ancient goddess, dangerous creatues, and things that aren't what they appear to be. It started out as a dream that occurred almost every night for two weeks earlier this year and wouldn't leave me alone until I wrote the idea down and began to brainstorm it. Can't wait to write it though I definitely still have a lot of prepping to do over this month and next - Halloween is going to provide some amazing inspiration just before NaNoWriMo begins!

I am interested to know what projects you will all be working on as well if you'd be happy to say :)

Also, if anyone wants to join me in a writing group on the NaNoWriMo website then please let me know. I have one all set up and ready to go called 'Writing and Lasagne' - named after two of my favourite things!

Actually, I'll join in because I'll be double forced to write because I have a simultaneous upper level writing course. Happens to be my last course of my bachelor's degree. Already have a solid plan and a partial write that needs re-writing for a science fiction/horror novel.

Saw a post on facebook yesterday that someone, who is planning on participating in NaNoWriMo this year, is considering extending the challenge for themself so that it lasts across two months (from October 1st to November 31st). That's 50,000 words across 61 days. How do you feel about this? Would you want to give it a try?

I thought it was an interesting idea though leaning more towards NaNo Rebellion (not that there is anything wrong with that!) It would allow for less pressure and November isn't always a month that works for people so could be beneficial to some. Just curious as to what everyone else's opinion was on this.

Sounds awesome :) is your degree in Creative Writing? I did both Creative Writing Undergrad/Bachelors and MA degree at my university so sympathise with you there! What's your NaNo username? I'll send you an invite to the group once your project is set up on there :)

Just an English major with a Creative Writing Minor. I'll be getting into an English MA specialized in gothic literature after as well.

    Username is the same: EFMingo

I did it last year. Twice, actually; I hit my 50k at the end of November and was only halfway done with the book, so I did another 50k in December to get 'er done. Then I spent the rest of the year editing it.

Step one: Write a book. Done.
Step two: Edit it so it's fit for human eyes. Done.

This year, I'm doing it again, and hoping I can check off step three.

Step three: Write a book someone actually wants to read.

    :D

I'd like to join in! Not sure if I can make 50K words in a month, but what the hay I'll give it a shot. I just signed up, my user name is TScream if you want to add me.

I have added you. Frankly, I've yet to figure out the new NaNo site layout.

This will be my first time participating in NaNoWriMo. I'm a little nervous it's mid-October and I'm not even sure what I am going to write about. Any advice for newbies?

That's a good question, haha. Well done for taking the plunge and signing up for NaNo this year though! My recommendation would be: go for whatever idea you have that pulls at your head and your heart the most - alternatively, if you don't already have a project set up, I would say go with an idea or phrase or image that inspires you and see where it takes you by just writing (you can always plan later once you've gotten started ... this is actually what I am doing this year as I have an idea that's been brewing these past few weeks but I have no plan for it only a single phrase :) besides, you still have just under two weeks to think on what you want to write! I would also suggest reading the NaNo Pep Talks on the website and, I know it sounds corny, but just have fun! Taking the challenge too seriously could block your creativity from the get go (I am talking from experience here but everyone is different so perhaps taking it too seriously is what will help - if this is the case then ignore what I said, haha).

It is also nice to work alongside other people who are going through the challenge with you (hence why groups are set up - if you'd like to be in the one I have created then let me know) though some prefer to go it alone. Personally, I am in the middle, I like a group to bounce ideas off of and to support and be supported back but I also like to do the actual writing on my own :) ... NaNoWriMo is really a very personal challenge, even though the rules are the same for everybody, because every writer is different. For me, each NaNo has revealed something about myself, as a writer, that I didn't know before which has been quite fun. You've already take the plunge into the challenge so now dive into a project or an idea and learn to swim and, if you feel like you are drowning, grab onto any life buoy you can (a group, afriend, a pep talk, etc.) or go with the flow and see where the waves take you :)

I’m going to work on Fabrication, a biopunk novel about what separates humans from their creations. It draws from Frankenstein, Prometheus, Alien and Willful Machines.

I don't think I am doing NaNoWriMo because I have school and it's going to get in the way of my work but I wish you guys good luck!

I'm planning on shelving my main WIP in November and working on a novel I titled Tortoise and Hare for NaNoWriMo. It's been on the backburner too long and needs to see the light of day. I just hope my day jobs don't interfere too much. I posted the initial chapter of the WIP some time back.

See, now I've posted that, I'm hoping that will drive me forward to actually do it.

That's a shame - perhaps next year, then ... or the Camps in April and July?
