If you're only referring to a smallish percentage of writers I would agree with you. There are exceptions/outliers in all activities, and it sounds like — in this aspect — you are one of them. But I suspect the overwhelming majority of writers will need to read as many books as they can in order to reach their full potential.

And my question, no offense intended, has to be: "how many books have you published?" How many books have you completed?

They're out there. I just keep my social media and my professional writing life entirely separate. You don't have to like it, but that's the way it goes.

and my question as a moderator is why in the gibbering name of Cerberus and his fluffy puppies, is it so difficult to have a civil conversation about this subject?

I can think of four separate occasions in which reading vs writing has come up and every single time the thread winds up going up in flames

    a) It is not acceptable to describe another members opinion as bullshit...

    b) How many books someone has published is not germane. We don't care whether someone is Stephen king with an alias, or a 13 year old writing their first book, they have an equal right to an opinion.
