70s and 80s Typical Street Terms for Weed and Coke?

Discussion in 'Research' started by OurJud, Sep 26, 2020.

Does anyone happen to remember what the typical street names for both weed and coke were in 70s and 80s Britain (if there was any change at all, that is). I'm talking about in casual conversation between users, i.e "You got any coke/weed, Phil?"

I'm aware of most of the generic slang for these drugs but they need to sit right in a 70s/80s setting. Is this the case with these or are you simply assuming they were around at the time?

My experience is, er, limited. And never extended to coke or even LSD. But we only called marijuana 'grass.' Those folks who were agin it, tended to call it 'pot.' (As in long-haired hippie pot-smokers.) And there was also 'hash,' which I don't remember ever being called anything else.

Ah. I suppose I could call it what the hell I like and explain in the narrative that it's their name for it. I'm sure plenty of people do/did have their own nicknames among themselves. I have a friend who calls coke oo-la-la.

all of those were in current use in the late 80s early 90's - generally things like weed/hash/pot/herb and snow, ching, tink, charlie, blow etc for cocaine are evergreen from the 60's on... it powdered coke wasn't called classic until crack really got going likewise chronic was only just becoming a thing in '89 but if you stick to the more generic terms you'll be fine

I think wacky baccy was only for leaf not resin... it mostly derived from people who were growing their own and drying it

Marijuana was definitely called grass in Britain in the 1970's. I remember it well :D

Wasn't "skunk" a thing or am I imagining that?

In the seventies , the resin was normally, dope , and grass was the leaves . You had speed , amphetamines, or downers , Barbiturates. You also had acid, LSD . Coke was just Coke , but was not commonly used in London, in the seventies , It was too expensive.

Yeah. I believe it was a particularly pungent variety.

Skunk was not used in the UK in the seventies . It is a strong variety of cannabis developed by growers by cross breding . It was not until the nineties that it could be easily bought on the streets . It is a product of hydro gardening and the early supplies came from Holland. Hydro gardening is now a growth, no pun intended , business in the UK.

I think you should watch TV cop shows from the era to get a feel of the common knowledge. The Sweeney for one would be a good start.

Also Speed or Wizz the cheaper alternative to coke was more common. In the 80s Methadone was introduced to get addicts off Heroin again needs looking at.
