agents on social media

I follow a few agents and editors on social media. We probably all do. Anyway, I like to see what they're saying about the industry, literature, and the world. I don't usually interact with them as much as follow them. But a big-time agent just liked something I posted.This is not an agent I follow so I'm not sure how he came across my post, but at the same time I'm thrilled that he did. Am I supposed to do anything about this? And what should I do if anything? I some how managed to get this guy's attention. But does that mean anything? I've never been in this sort of situation. This could very well mean nothing, but I would like for that not to be the case. Any suggestions? If this is an opportunity to interact with this agent, I want to take advantage of that. What would you guys do if anything?

 

I wouldn't base too much off a like...it may be that he just liked your post and that's the end of it. He probably liked other stuff that day as well. But the least you could do is follow him and start regularly replying to his stuff.

I'm on a music forum and a big name (sort of) guitar player liked one of my posts. I don't think it meant anything.

 

Shoot. And here I was preparing to be literary famous. LOL. The thing he liked was related to where I'm published. I was sort of hoping that meant he was checking out my writing.

rather than read anything into it, I'd take it as a promising sign that he may like your work or the way you think, and the way to probe this to see if it could lead to any interaction is to check out his Twitter account or wherever it was that he liked you on, and find something you could like back or, better, comment on. Start genuine conversations, see if he responds. Continue being active on your own account. If he's interested, he'll check your stuff more and more. See if it leads anywhere.

But based off just the one like, no, that doesn't mean anything. But now that he's on your radar, you might as well use that like you would any other agent

 

Okay, so something similar just happened again with a new person, but this time I was liked AND followed. Again, it isn't an editor or agent I was following. I followed back, but should I send some sort of message this time? Or do I just wait and see what comes of it? I feel like that could take forever. This guy seems to want to keep an eye on me and my writing, and I'm like wow! I really don't know how this one found me either. Maybe through hashtags or something, but are agents and editors really looking for writers on social media? The one who's following me has a mix of personal and writing stuff posted so it would seem he's handling this account himself. The one I mentioned when starting this thread I really can't tell if he is handling his own account or has some sort of assistant doing it.

I really don't do that much with social media, but I sort of feel like I should be doing more, especially if there are publishing people looking for writers. I do post links to my stuff when I have a short story or something like that published and tag or hashtag the place that published it. What sort of stuff are you all putting on social media? I can't really control how often I publish. I do have a new short story coming out in a few months and I post about acceptances. I also repost stuff I read and like and stuff by friends who publish. I'm just worried I'm a little too infrequent with when I publish to keep the attention of industry professionals on social media. How active are your social media accounts? What else do you post besides links to your work (either to buy it or read it)?

I also just googled myself to see what pops up and I'm pretty happy about what pops up right on the first page. Half of the google results on the first page are some of my published pieces. The other results are find-people search ads or other people with the same name (not writers). But I feel pretty good about that and how I'm coming across through a google search. The first thing I did with both these people was to google them. I thought it might be something they do as well. Have you guys googled yourselves to see what potential publishers or agents might see if they are checking you out?
