Oh, it was the director's cut, by the way. And I didn't watch it, so I'll do that now. Sorry, Repo Man.
Just saw Tenet in the theater. I vaguely recall liking the first third of it, but I've already forgotten the rest. Timey wimey something something backwards blah blah blah. Olive Oyl was okay I guess. Maybe.
I‘ve just finished Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020) with Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams. You should like the Eurovision Song Contest at least a bit, but then it‘s fun, often really in the sense of „funny“ and also in the sense of just getting into a good mood. I really enjoyed it.
Finally got to see John Wick III Parabellum. An intense romp following the poor guy, picking up where the second left off, which is nice. Not really much of a cerebral film, but I kinda figured it wasn't going to be since the second wasn't really that way either. However, I feel like they are baiting for a 4th installment, since there seems to be one thing left for it to do, which will have to be its conclusion. I mainly think this due to it running out of road and places to take the narrative. Overall an enjoyable action flick.
Every time a movie comes out by Miranda July I get giddy like a schoolgirl. I can't wait for Kajillionaire. Looks... like exactly my kinda movie.
I shall be watching Up the Junction later tonight. One of those rare occasions where the film adaptation is better than the TV play.
I really enjoyed 'Enola Holmes'. Brilliant use of the forth wall, espeacilly the head in the barrel shot.
Funny, I wasn't sold on it. I guess i just felt the breaking of the fourth wall should mean a bit more and it didn't really draw me in to the story anymore. I usually like the use of the fourth wall because it's supposed to draw the viewer or reader in as an active participant, but I didn't get this here. It's always nice to see Helen Bonham Carter and Henry Cavill though!
The commercial was all fourth-wall breaking, which convinced me not to watch it. I think that and narration are going to be the things that date the current period of filmmaking.
What put me off was the constant, in your face, overly obvious hammering of the current trope: 'woman breaks away from gender stereotypes to everyone's shock in an age of conformity and proves to all those stuffy conservatives women can do anything a man does even better than them.' Wow. How groundbreaking. Couldn't she just be herself rather than constantly reminding the audience that she's not a lady and doesn't embroider. Just have her do her thing. Stop telling us how fucking different she is. We can see that for ourselves. I'm all for kick ass female characters but fuck me that's lazy hack writing.
That's the whole movie. Like every minute of it. If I wasn't watching it with other people and didn't have the two other actors I already mentioned, I would have left it early. It's utterly exhausting that trope until there's no angle of it left.
It's a shame. Helena Bonham Carter still makes me weak at the knees. Marla in Fight Club was a triumph (I had a GF a lot like that character).
Agreed. Though, I imagine that was a difficult girlfriend to get along with a good amount of the time. Haven't watched that film in some years. Maybe it's time again...
Wow, I really loved all of that. Did not feel overdone one iota, maybe even had room for more. But then again, I like women that can woop the crap out of idiots while reciting Shakespear. I don't remember the name of the ex-model turned MMA fighter who, when asked why she switched to MMA, she responded 'Because I like punching people in the face.' And she's gorgeous. This Enola had that edge to her.
I feel like Big Little Lies started that trend of the main narrative being cut up by characters doing interviews about the plot. I find that makes the story look trashy and like some weird reality show. I know the movie 'Hustlers' did that as well. Anyway, recently watched: Spiderman: Enter The Spiderverse The Lighthouse Tarzan Ghostbusters The Firm Bullets Over Broadway All good in different ways.
'Enola Holmes' has a 91% percent approval rating. Not a lot of films, or series, get up into the 90%, or even into the 80s for that matter. That of course does not mean one has to like it just because, but good numbers do bode well. Not sure if limited series also count in this thread, but I am watching 'The Queen's Gambit' now. Just so dang good. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes! I do recommend it. Highly. And you don't have like chess to enjoy it.
So do I, but it doesn't have to be spoon fed. I like subtlety in stories. A great example of this is The Favourite. They subvert gender stereotypes while remaining true to the time-period and not hitting us over the head with constant "look, did you see how we subverted gender stereotypes!" No. They just did it. Built strong, commanding female characters who owned the screen, the plot, and the men without everyone having to make a point of it. Just let them kick ass on their own terms. Another great example is Winter's Bone. Lots of tough women and no one needed to keep reminding the audience how they played against stereotypes. Now that I think of it, pointing it out constantly is condescending. "Look, that woman is tough because she behaves like a man, did you see?!" Rather than just having tough women. It's also annoying that they keep reminding the audience of the stereotypes, rather than just crushing them. No need to point at that MMA fighter every time she hits someone and yell at everyone, hey look, that girl just punched someone in the face, girls don't normally punch people in the face, isn't that great?! I think we're all better than that now. Edit: The Last Jedi has 90% on rotten tomatoes. And that movies sucks bigtime. The writing on that is garbage.
All good points and observations, selbbin. I'll look for 'The Favorite' first, and see what all this fuss is about. Note: this doesn't mean that I am changing my mind about Enola Agree on ‘The Last Jedi’. I think their numbers come from hard core fans that are impossible to disappoint no matter how much it falls short. They could make it with puppets and still hit 90%.
I wouldn't want you to change your mind. We like the movies we like. And that's what I like about movies. It's so super subjective. What you think is rubbish I might consider the best thing ever. And we'd both be right. Yes. Check out The favourite. It is utterly amazing. Hopefully you agree that it not winning the Academy Award for best picture was a crime. Here's the trailer because I like sharing trailers.
This film is a masterclass in strong female characters by an incredibly talented director. A little indie movie that made such an impact it was nominated for best picture and made J Law's career.
