    Question about formatting

Discussion in 'Self-Publishing' started by Viridian, Oct 30, 2020.

Can anyone suggest a way to format my book for paperback other than Vellum. I've been using word, and up until now everything has gone smoothly, but I've hit a snag. Word is inserting blank pages after random section breaks. I can delete these once it's converted to a pdf doc, but that won't resolve the gutter/mirror margin problem these blank pages are causing. If anyone on here is a word expert, I would greatly appreciate your input. I've checked that all section breaks are 'next page' and not 'odd' or 'even', but nothing seems to work. Alternatively I may have to consider using some other software to format. I'm aware that Vellum is amazing, but I'm not a Mac user (though I'm seriously considering it now!).

    Many thanks
    V.

Publishing to Amazon only or...? If you only publish to Amazon I think Kindle Create is great. Super easy and free. They've been updating it frequently and as of now I don't have many complaints as far as the paperback goes.

If you want a file other places can read though... I've heard people talk about liking Jutoh but I don't know anything about it.

Amazon initially, but going wide once Amazon is all set up. Ive already published to kindle, and that went smoothly enough, it’s just the paperback formatting that’s causing issues. I’ve tried every bit of troubleshooting i can find but those section breaks are still randomly throwing in blank pages.

I've never used word for formatting so can't help with that. What did you use for formatting the ebook?

Word, and it worked a treat. I’ve done some research and some weighing up. InDesign looks good but complicated, and I’ve been toying with the idea of buying a new computer for some time before mine dies. If I can’t fix the problem in word (got one more idea to try) then I’ll invest in a Mac. Thanks for help :)

You can use vellum on a pc via Mac in cloud

That aside...Serif's Affinity Publisher is about 90% of Indesign for a teeny fraction of the price

Figured out what the issue was, but decided to go with Vellum via Macincloud. Sooooo much easier/quicker.

@jimmybobb from memory i think i inserted a blank page at the end of the doc. It needed to end on an even number and because it was 417 pages it was throwing everything out. I checked it worked after that but still chose to use vellum via macincloud. Expensive to purchase a vellum licence, but as this is the first book of many i considered it an investment - and vellum was considerably easier/quicker for formatting.
