    Help with fantasy plot

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by IntAngel, Dec 2, 2020.

Hi! I'm writing a fantasy for a video game, I've been thinking for more than a month about a great plot, but it just doesn't occur to me.

The story is about Einar a great warrior who can form weapons from god's dust, at the beginning there were 7 gods and one of them traps the others within humanity (I still don't know why), that's the reason why that all humans have a symbol that allows them to do magic or have a power depending on the seal they have, but Einar is different because he can control the dust of the god that captures the other 6 gods and there is no one like him.

What I want is for Einar to fight these 6 gods, so they need to break free again or possess someone, and an idea of the plot twist I have is for Einar to team up with a warrior and in the end it is revealed that she is one of the six gods.

It is a medieval story with magic, kingdoms and creatures.

Do you have any ideas to help? :)

Ideas about what, exactly? Are you having trouble figuring out where to start? How they meet? World building? This is a pretty vague question.

okay so flexing the juices here

lets say in the beginning the gods fought over who would rule and the god of the dust won, and to prove his superiority forced the others into the material world. however as time progressed the god of dust grew to miss his/her brethren but the only way to bring them back to the heaven realm is to take on a vessel and destroy their physical vessel himself or in this case through einar. now it can be revealed that when the gods go from the heaven plane to the human plane they loose all their memories. which would explain the look of the mortal plane, which would be 6 countries ruled by the various other gods or their decendents, with not the bestest of relationships with one another. now you can have them take on different vessels than the ones they were cast down with but i think them being stuck in their original vessels would be better and you can have the weakest of the 6 be the one that has to team up with the player early on then they grow with the player as the player uncovers the god of dusts memories. which is why he has his powers, and eventually after beating the 5th god it is revealed that the companion has been the 6th this whole time but the player and the 6th god are comrades and you can have different endings depending on what to do from their.

this is just a skeleton but its an idea let me know if you like it

I haven't thought about that possibility, I really like this skeleton dude thank you, I just don't like Einar's main reason, he forced his brothers to go to the material world, and then he misses them and wants to bring them back.

Give him the ability to create every magical weapon, and call it Ultimate Blade Works?

But seriously, what you've posted isn't a plot - it's a synopsis. You need to work on the details of the plot. Who is he? Where does he go? Who does he meet? What trials and tribulations does he face? I mean, he's a great warrior. How did he become a great warrior?

Your worldbuilding will be driven by the needs of your plot. Ultimately, it's your story and we can't come up with it for you. You need to develop your own ideas. We can help with pointers, if you ask specific questions.

If he's a great warrior, he must have fought in some great wars or defeated some great foes. What wars, what foes? There's a good starting point for the history of your world right there. Work out the details and build on it.

You´re completely right, I actually have a little Einar's story background, He is part of a faction of great warriors, this faction was created by the right hand of one king, but he didn't want to obey orders so he left with some people and later on the faction grew up and became a small city, but with really powerful warriors (like spartans), Einar bornt in this faction, lose his father in a war, lose his wife and child, and he thinks is his fault, he thinks is not strong enough, and that's his motivation to become a great warrior, also he has a little brother (he is not dead), and in my old story his little brother became a god, but a bad god and is the final boss.

I don't really know how to start the story and where to drive Einar

I take it English is not your first language? Will you be writing in English?

99% of whether an idea is good or bad one is in its execution. Only 1% is in its raw bones.

So what makes an otherwise good concept into a bad one?

Tone is a big thing. I can write a story about a man getting pregnant good if a) use it as an insightful perspective of people transitioning from female to male or b) an outright comedy.

Basic story structure. You would be surprised how many stories exists where nothing happens. Each story has a rising action, climax, falling action and maybe exposition and resolution. Depending on the genre, would depend on how much emphasis is placed on each of these parts.

Themes. What are you trying to say and are the characters and events emphasizing and exploring that theme? Now some people say "but my story has no theme. It's just some dudes having a funny road trip." That's your theme! So that means you don't want to get too heavy or too dark.

Note, I've said nothing about characters. Characters' have been severely misunderstood as far as their purpose. People have started to view characters as an outlet for their ego as opposed to a vessel for story telling. A vessel for story telling is a character who helps drive about the central theme of the story and relay it to a particular audience. A story that is designed for a mass audience will typically have simple themes with diverse characters. This does not mean the story is bad or that the themes are obvious. Only the wide appeal means that things are simplified. Books that are more cerebral will often have very narrow and complex themes, and don't give two craps about diversity. I think this came from our nihilistic view of the world where nothing really matters, and so characters and ego are all you have and it's not been very good for writing in general. It could also be a product of a society that increasingly refuses to engage in ideas that are not its own. Whatever the reason, it's a trend that needs to go, but that's a topic for another time.

But characters still play a part in creating a good story. If a character's actions are contradicting the theme or the argument they're meant to display, then it can tank the book.

Right. And in the case of video games, you have the 4th dimension of the story needing to be integrated and designed to compliment the gameplay. Why was Metroid: Other M such a snuffed at title of the Metroid series? Many people cited Samus caring too much about what "the men think" (eww) but that's just not it. I personally thought it was great to see a gentler side of Samus. Other M was bad because the game play and story didn't really work together. There was a whole subplot of a traitor that couldn't be properly explored in the type of action game it is and the reason for Samus not having all her abilities made even less sense. Minor RPG elements, like being able to hack a console or dialogue with certain NPCs could have done a lot to help that story. In the meantime, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice continues to be lauded as one of the best games of 2017, despite its lackluster game play. That's because the game play and visuals played so well with the story that was introduced, that elevated all of it beyond expectations.

    Exactly!
I'm trying to develop the whole game as one piece, the story needs to back up the mechanics and vice versa, the music is also important, the visuals need to back up the story and game play, and the way you tell the story.
I have the very basics mechanics, is a game inspired by god of war 4, but in 2d and top-down.
