The following definition of cyclopean: denoting a type of ancient masonry made with massive irregular blocks. "cyclopean stone walls"

trephine: Medical instrument used to remove a small circle of bone or tissue. trephining: The act of using a trephime.
Interesting. I'm used to seeing it spelled trepan and trepanning. That might be the British spelling. And it immediately makes me think of this:
Apparently, a trepan is a specific type of trephine used for the skull. A trephine can be used for other things too, such as a biopsy.
I remember first seeing one of those in the 1984 film Iceman. There's one scene where they pull Charlie the caveman into an OR, terrifying the shit out of him, and basically take a core sample of one of his pecs and eject it into a bottle of liquid. Man, I was 13? when I saw that and it still sticks with me. Dr. Pimple Popper sometimes uses them on larger cysts as well.
Thanks for this. I love "animal adjectives" and probably use them to an unhealthy degree. They're useful for quickly getting the point across when a new character shows up and I don't want to drag out a long description of how they look or move or speak (yet). I doubt I'll use "murine" much because most probably won't know what it means, but it's nice to have in my arsenal. For the sake of contributing to the thread: feline (cat) bovine (cow) taurine (bull) porcine (pig) canine (dog) delphine (dolphin) vulpine (fox) piscine (fish) lupine (wolf) anguine (snake) aquiline (eagle) leonine (lion) ursine (bear) That's just what I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there's dozens more out there. I hope someone finds it useful.
I wonder if the makers of these eyedrops knew that? It is or used to be a well-known brand in the US.
Relating to porcupotamuses (technically porcupotami) actually, but thanks for asking. Spoiler Jeebus, imagine 1500 kilos of bad-tempered territoriality... with spikes!
Autopoiesis (from Greek αὐτo- (auto-) 'self', and ποίησις (poiesis) 'creation, production'): a system capable of reproducing and maintaining itself by creating its own parts and eventually further components.
One of my very favorite goos, that. ETA: In addition to "autopoiesis" above, I learned "ecophagy" ("eating the environment", more literally "eating the habitation") from @Iain Aschendale's link just now, and damn me if that isn't one of the coolest-sounding words I've heard in a good long while.
