Katsumi: I’m sorry, revival magic? Your magic can bring back the dead?

Jefrye: That was an easy question. I would fight them. Now I'm sure you might be wondering about Kyris' father... Truth is, His Majesty is not a bad Emperor. Sure, he certainly isn't an ideal family man, but to be fair that can happen even in the poorest of families. No person is perfect, we all have some flaws. And as a ruler, he hasn't passed oppressive laws or raised taxes to the point where commoners starve because they can't afford food. Regarding joining forces with the pirates... Frankly, I don't think they would care enough to do anything about such a situation. If, for the sake of argument, they were... I suppose that I would in that case.

Kyris: Is there a time limit on that revival magic? I am not sure you can call it bringing people back from the dead and it is not magic, but with our technology, we can get a heart beating again. It has to be done within a few minutes after it has stopped, however, or it will be too late. If the magic you talk about lack a limit on when it can be used, then maybe--

    Jefrye: You can't be considering--

Kyris: *looks at him* Is it that wrong for me to want Mother back?

Jefrye: No... But it has been fifteen years since she passed away. And as you said yourself: the past is the past.

Ellis: Only the ones who can use Holy Magic, such as Adra and Captain Sail, are able to revive the dead. There are other avenues, but it's not true revival. Some spells have a time limit, but powerful Holy Magic wielders don't have such a restraint.

Mettle: Fun fact, every member of the Corpse Voyage have all either died at one point, or don't count as a living human being anymore. I was revived by the most powerful priest on Yara during my time with our crew. Ellis' Doll Magic became so potent that she somehow accidentally gave herself the inability to age that her dolls have.

Ellis: I'm still trying to figure out how that happened.

Mettle: Captain Sail drowned at sea, but, somehow, his own faith and devotion to the ocean revived him as some kind of avatar of the sea. I don't quite get it, either. Spirit is, well, an actual spirit, and Echo's dead body was used in magical experiments to create human-animal hybrids.

Ellis: From what I can tell, it was a success, despite how horrifying the process to get there was.

Mettle: Considering how we're still alive and kicking after a couple of years, we all must have lucked out with having no time limits. That's why we're called the Corpse Voyage!

Mettle: Good to hear that. I think you've pretty much proven Matra wrong, then. You aren't evil at all.

Jefrye & Luekas: *almost in unison* You’re all dead?!

Kyris: I must admit that I was not expecting a revelation such as this. How common is it for things like this to happen in your world?

Davian: I am also curious about if there are more than just your crew that is this way.

Kyris: And if you technically are dead, do you still get hungry and tired? And are you all immortal now?

Davian: If you don’t need food or sleep, I can see quite an advantage there.

Mettle: I died, but I was resurrected. I still need to eat, I still get older. You know how it goes.

Ellis: Myself and Echo still need to eat, but Captain Sail and Spirit don't get older, nor do they eat. Technically, I could sustain myself on my magic alone, but it's easier to just eat. It is very convenient to not have to store so much food in the ship; we have more room for bounties and treasure. Everyone except for Mettle does not age, anymore.

Mettle: It sucked when I died. I mean, I'm glad I'm back, but I was really feeling good about being the only normal human on the Corpse Voyage. Too bad someone just had to get more treasure.

Ellis: Oh, come on, it's not her fault. She's young and was just starting out with the crew. Well... it is her fault, but she learned from it, and you're still alive. That sounds like a win-win to me.

Mettle: Yours can't? I thought that you would have it, considering you have gods, and all. Don't all gods have the power to revive the dead?

Ayana: I have so many questions.

Sapphire: Agreed. Nithara and I don’t count as living human beings either, though!

Nithara: …I hate that that was funny.

Sapphire: Listen, I have so little in life. Let me have amusement at humans’ expense.

Katsumi: Well, yes, the gods can revive the dead, so the stories say, but the gods are not personally carrying out all magic cast across our world! They watch over the world, but they do not intervene. Some say they would in the most dire of circumstances, but they appear to not have deemed anything in recorded history dire enough.

Davian: I agree that extra storage space is always a good thing.

Luekas: To bad a part of ours now is occupied by a useless shuttle.

Kyris: Don't blame me. It was you who sabotaged it. *to Ellis and Mettle* I wonder... Even though most of you have stopped aging, is it still possible for you to be killed?

Kyris: You are not the only non-humans here. We qualify for that category as well, after all.

Kyris: Sounds a little like it is for us. The legends about the gods we once worshipped also say they preferred to just guide us and for the most part let us solve our problems ourselves. Personally, I believe they never even existed to begin with. Most of what was deemed to be their handiwork has been explained by science over the years. This is by no means me claiming your beliefs to be false, though. Our worlds are fundamentally different, after all, and what is true for one might not be true for the other.

Katsumi: Indeed they are. Most in our world believe in the gods—though there is no concrete proof of their existence, some say they have felt their blessing, and besides, we’ve no reason not to believe.
Sapphire: Which is nice. I worried when we arrived that we would be surrounded by humans.

Nithara: I do wish there were more of our own people here, though. You may have pointed ears, but you are clearly not elven.

Kyris: But that is why it is called faith, isn't it? We stopped believing because the miracles the gods were said to perform became things we could easily do ourselves, and since we definitely are not gods then the logical answer is that gods never existed to begin with. They could have been a species from outside the Helios System, though. One possessing technology that we at the time didn't have.

Kyris: Really? What gave us away? The blue skin? The fact that our eyes are one solid color? Okay, joking aside... Are there few elves in your world, or is it more that there just happen to be few elves present in your group?

Sapphire: *laughs* Indeed, your disguise was immaculate. It’s a mystery how we figured it out. I have known humans who believe elven eyes to be solid colors, though—they are mystified when they meet actual elves, and find that just because you can’t see the whites of our eyes doesn’t mean we have no pupils. Humans are strange folk.

Katsumi: And yet you love one.

    Ayana: And ally with another.

Sapphire: Okay, not all humans. But most.

Nithara: There are plenty of elves back home. Where I come from, it is almost all elves. But we are not there—we are here, where no other worlds seem to have elves. Except for the fellow who was surprised that we age.

Bellaflor: Yes is a school where they teach us magic. That's the only kind of school we have in the island. And really, any kind of help is welcomed. Specially since I can't use the magic of our world so learning about other worlds and their spells may help me not fail every subject.

Ellis: Unfortunately, yes, we can all still be killed. Mettle, Echo, and myself can all be killed with conventional methods. Spirit and Captain Sail, however, can only be killed with magic.

Mettle: Well, maybe not Captain Sail...

    Ellis: Yes, that is concerning.

Mettle: To be honest, I'm not sure what the Captain is, anymore. As far as we can tell, no spell was used to revive him when he drowned, and it definitely wasn't any god that we know of. He just... came back to life, like it was nothing.

Ellis: He has new, unexplained abilities, too. He can control the waves, to a degree; he can call thunderstorms and summon hurricanes; he can, can, I don't even know what it is!

Mettle: I don't think he has a real body now. It's not like he's a ghost, you can touch him and everything, but it's like he has magic where his blood should be. Except, it's not magic! It's some kind of weird, unexplainable energy that came out of nowhere. I've seen his entire head get chopped off. I've seen his stomach slashed from hip to hip. I've seen him die in many ways, but, every time, he just regenerates whatever damage was done to him like it wasn't a problem. His powers are actually terrifying, and we don't even know where they came from. Every time we ask, he just tells us that "they came from my love for Yara." What does that even mean?

Mettle: If you want, I can get Echo. She's pretty non-human, herself. At least, she looks like it.

Ellis: Well, I'm sorry that Matra left before he could help, but I'm not too sure that would work? Considering how he couldn't break a simple curse from another world, I don't think our magics will align enough for us to help you. He was just talking big and pretending he could understand another world's magic. Well... if anyone could, it would be him, but he still wouldn't know enough right now to be able to help you.

*Kyris and Jefrye both get concerned looks on their faces, then look at each other.*

Jefrye: I guess you are thinking what I'm thinking...

Kyris: Yeah... *to Ellis and Mettle* I do not know this Captain Sail, so there is a chance that I am wrong, but... From the way you described him, if he were to turn to evil deeds there would be no way at all to stop him. The thought is rather unsettling.

    Mettle: Yeah, that's the problem.

*An incredibly high-pitched laugh comes from behind Mettle. He spins to catch her, but the girl matches him and stays out of sight. She looks very young. Probably a 13 year old. She looks like a fusion between a person and a bat. She's covered in light brown fur, and milky white eyes. She's wearing ear muffs over her bat ears. Her fingers are instead claws.*

Echo: That's not true, Mettle. I found his weakness!

Ellis: Oh, hello, Echo. How have you been?

Echo: I've been great, Elly! I has bored because we've been on break, so I ended up stealing this dagger from some nobleman. *She pulls out an intricate dagger with a solid gold blade.* I figured it must be worth something.

    Mettle: Did you get caught?

Echo: Nope! They didn't suspect a thing.

    Mettle: Attagirl!

Echo: Anyway, I showed it off to Sail, and he got kind of woozy until I took it away. I tried again later, and the same thing happens. Whatever this thing's made of, he doesn't like it. You guys know what it is?

Ellis: I'm not sure, I don't think I've seen anything like this before.

Mettle: Maybe. I think I saw some in the old man's church? I think it's a conduit for magic. It makes your spells stronger and easier to cast. Matra probably has some.

Bellaflor: *sad* Oh, that's a shame.

Sugar White: What species... live... in your world?

Bellaflor: *cheerful again* Right! If someone here needs help with a monster or other kind of creatures, we two can help! I speak dragon, if that's useful to someone.

Ellis: Well, we just have the normal creatures. There's humans, elk, dragons, wyverns, fish, leviathans, ghosts, demons, gods, magical constructs. I couldn't name them all, but those are the major ones.

Echo: Maybe you can teach them something, Elly. You never know.

Mettle: Their magic may be similar enough to ours. *To Sugar and Bellaflor* How does you magic work?

Nithara: I’m not sure what you are, though.

Echo: That's rude! *Starts stamping her foot.* Just because I don't look as human as the rest of ya, doesn't mean I ain't one! I'm just a little fuzzier, is all. We can't all have round ears and smooth skin! Naw, I'm just kiddin'. I am just as human as the rest of you, though!

To answer your question, I died and was brought back as this weird human-bat hybrid. The jerk who did it was trying to make some new kind of special warriors, I think?

    Luekas:
*to Echo* So you were human and got turned into the appearance you have now?

Davian: *looks at Kyris* What do you think? Gene manipulation?

Kyris: Yes, that would most likely be our world’s equivalent of what happened to her. *starts twirling a lock of his bangs around his index finger* There are ways to reverse it, but that would require the subject’s original DNA for it to work.

Jefrye: *to Echo* Ellis and Mettle mentioned that you have been looking for a solution, but without success yet. I hope you do find a solution one day.

Kyris: *to Echo, Ellis and Mettle* Creating special warriors by bringing the dead back to life and change them into hybrids in the process… I hope that is not legal in your world because it is wrong on so many levels. I am so sorry for you, Echo. I also hope there is a way to undo what was done to you.

Davian: *to Echo* On the subject of your looks, we don’t think you look weird at all. Among the Nine Species of the Helios System we Gaeans and the Hermesians are the ones who look closest to what you call human. The rest look like animal hybrids, like you.

Ayana: And how'd that work out for him? Seems like the sort of thing that would go horribly wrong.

Katsumi: Is that possible in our world? Because if it is, it ought to be illegal.

Nithara: You would have to ask a necromancer about that one. (To Echo) We didn't mean to insult you. In case you couldn't tell, we aren't exactly as human as the rest of you.

Sapphire: Or, you know, at all.

Echo: I can look all I want, but I prolly can't fix it. If Matra and Gramps workin together can't find anythin, I don't think it's possible. Not that I'm complainin, or anythin. There're some cool things I got out of it. When I was alive the first time, I definitely couldn't do the things I can do now, that's for sure. I'm not too busted up about it.

Echo: Ya serious? You aren't human?

Mettle: Oh, of course not. *Points to Kyris' group* They're blue, after all.

Echo: What!? Mettle, why didn't you tell me. I can't hear things like color, y'know that! Now I look stupid -- I'm gonna scream!

Mettle: Ah, calm down. It's not like they're hurt, or anything. They probably just feel bad for you, more than anything.

Echo: *To Davian* Hold on, you're sayin that a whole seven of the types of people on your world got turned into Mixes? How is there even a mage powerful enough to do that? I decided to start callin us "Mixes" from now on, by the way.

Ellis: Definitely illegal. Incredibly illegal. So illegal, in fact, that the Council, of all people, was about to mobilize the kingdom's army to chase after him. Usually they don't care about what doesn't affect them, but it seems the combination of the evil of his, along with the possibility that he would use them against the kingdom, has brought out a little good in even them.

Echo: They actually started lookin into it, just not with an army. I got talked to by some Council spies, and they thought I couldn't hear em when they were talkin about chasin him. Joke's on them, I hear everythin.

Echo: Far as I can tell, it all worked out pretty well. I mean, most of the Mixes I saw were fine. Only a few got left behind, like I did, but that's because we didn't turn out quite right. He still hasn't been caught, so that's gotta mean he's still winnin, right? I don't care too much, either way. Till he gets on the wrong side of the Corpse Voyage, he's no problem of mine.

    Nithara: Oh—you can’t see? My apologies, I didn’t realize.

Sapphire: Well, no, we are not human. Ayana and Katsumi are, but Nithara and I are elves.

Echo: Don't feel bad, I'm not fully blind. Part of what I got is that I can "see" as long as I can hear. The sounds kinda bounce offa the things around me, so I can "see" the outlines, kinda like a bat or a dolphin. Only drawback is, my hearing's too good. S'why I need the ear muffs *Points to the muffs on her ears.* Loud sounds can hurt, and whatnot. Can't hear things like color, though, so I guess that's a bummer.

Y'really not human? Doesn't that make things a bit difficult if ya want to work with them? I mean, there's different languages, for starters. You prolly act different, too, like dragons and wyverns; they might be similar, but they're as different as a tree and a rock.

Sapphire: We are definitely not human. Even if I weren’t already aware, humans have made that abundantly clear to me.

Katsumi: There are different languages, yes. The human and elven lands speak different tongues, but some learn the other land’s language in addition to their own. As a princess, I needed to learn Aelionic, for purposes of trade and diplomacy.

Sapphire: Your Aelionic is hardly suited for that.

Katsumi: Yes, well, I am working on it.

Nithara: Being spies, Ayana and I learned both languages as young girls. We can also imitate a number of accents in both.

Sapphire: Under Fraulian rule, Sylannians are expected to speak Vasli, the human tongue. Of course, among our own people, we prefer our language, but it is not as though we can go through life avoiding humans entirely. So it is necessary to learn their language, for whenever we must interact with them.

Nithara: And human and elven cultures are certainly quite different, but it is not as though humans or elves are monoliths. We can work together, the same way that humans from different kingdoms can work together.
