    Names that mean "failure"?

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Adam Bolander, Mar 8, 2021.

I want one of my characters to have a name that relates to, in one way or another, failure or disappointment. Something quick and easy to read and say, and preferably feminine sounding. Right now the best idea I have is "Fali" which is literally an anagram of "Fail." Can anyone help me think of a better one?

Maybe rather than an actual name that means fail, how about an epitaph others attached the the name? Like this:

When I was in high school gym class we were playing soccer and this kid named Dan Graham messed up a play. One of the other kids said "G*d d*mn Dan Graham!"

After that it became a thing in that class, to his ever-lasting shame.

Oedipus Tyrannus: a complete fork-up of a character. True classic.

Edi (ee-die) Tyran. So it's sorta subtle... but not too subtle.

Hmm, I think I read a book once where the family gave their (many) kids nicknames based on their traits/interests but the youngest one didn't really have anything that stuck out so they just called him Seven (it was the number child he was).

Not being political here, but I think everyone can agree that Ralph Nadir is the worst name ever. So maybe use one of those because they sound terrible.

    ralph (verb) to vomit
    nadir (noun) lowest point

I would call my character Dweezil Nadir. His parents were burned out prog fans. He was conceived during a Phish tour.

Is it a feminine or a masculine name by the way? Or is it gender neutral?

Ooh, I dunno. Randy Baumgartner has engendered more than a few innuendos on British TV.

What about Fraca? Derived from the Spanish "fracaso" which means failure.

"Nadir" means rare in Turkish and doesn't have a negative meaning! It's important to check that if there is a meaning in another widely-spoken language I think...You just have to Google the word...

On the other hand, given that the OP is probably writing in English, nadir means "low point" in English, and most readers will be more familiar with the English meaning rather than the Turkish meaning. I wouldn't worry about coincidental meanings in foreign languages.
