    Scrivener 3 for Windows

Discussion in 'Writing Software and Hardware' started by SlayerC79, Apr 28, 2021.

Has now been released (as of 23rd May)

If you're like me and you've waited from 2017 for Scrivener 3 to be released, this will be great news.

(Yes, 2017! 4 years to make a new version. Crazy stuff)

I used the beta for years. I wrote three novels on beta! I really don't understand why it took so long.

    Three novels on beta? Impressive.

I had heard that the beta was fairly reliable (from a few versions back) but I didn't have the desire to try it.

My modus operandi was to wait for the final product to be released. I was using the delay as an excuse to slack off... guess I need to get cracking.

L&L can say what they like and respecting Windows users, but their main target is Apple. Taking four years is unforgivable. I've been reading their blog in all that time and the amount of excuses they've made, from 2017, is mind blowing.

A lot of Windows Scrivener users have said that they won't buy version 3 because of the delay. Not entirely sure if that's a bluff or not.

Either way, it's atrocious customer service for Wondows users.

There have been other programs that started out as Apple only, or heavily slanted in favor of Apple first, with Windows users being treated like red-headed stepchildren. Then those companies discovered that there were a LOT more Windows users than there were Apple users, and the priority shifted. I think (IIRC) that Quark was one of those. Aldus PageMaker might have been another.

Yeah. It's a weird one. As you say, the Apple customers have been treated as 1st class fliers, whilst Windows users are treated as baggage.

Quarkxpress? I used to use that. That takes me back.

Please do.. doubt you will. ;)

I haven't used it, as of yet. I have noticed the new logo, though.

Literature and Latte is well aware of this, but they don't really care about it.

I've used the beta/community Linux version of Scrivener and it's pretty good, despite not having the full feature set of the MacOS version.

It's not usually a matter of how people are being treated, but the fact that Apple computers already have the architecture built in and Microsoft don't. It makes Apples more expensive, but they're pre-built for doing art and design related work, whereas Microsoft computers are made for business chores and simple websurfing type activities.

I'll have to take your word for it, as I've never used an Apple. Well.. I may have used an Apple II way back in my school days.

There was so much discussion by Scrivener owners on the L&L forums that went over my head. Suffice to say, there's s lot of politics where Apple and Windows users are concerned.

I use MacOS, iOS, Windows, and Linux, depending what machine I am on. I have to say I am now at the point where MacOS is my favorite, followed by some Linux distros, then Windows. iOS still isn’t like a full OS to me.

https://www.atticus.io/ is out for people who signed up via email. It works on all platforms and will incorporate tools as a replacement to Vellum at half the cost. I'm going to wait for the full product release and wait to see what people think of it.

Scrivener has two development teams. I've read they are not on the same track. I have a feeling they have been dealing with spaghetti code to update the app. Hopefully, in the future, they will join and use one code-base. The Mac side has the advantages of tools baked into MacOS. There's tons of software out there that's great on either platform. LibreOffice is one that runs on many platforms. My irritation with Scrivener is that for compiling it can get very complicated. It's the complete opposite of Vellum. I have Scrivener, but I just don't use it. I'm back on MS Office, Google Docs, and LibreOffice depending on the machine I'm on and the project I'm working on. I find Scrivener to be a mess, although they do have good technical support. And they do have good development teams, and there may be some organizational problems that prevent the two teams from merging. They did sent out a survey about six months ago that was very encouraging - it sounded like they were listening to people's comments. I think Scrivener is great for a lot of people, but it's a tool with a 700 or so manual.

    Cool. Thanks very much.

I'll stick a pin in it.

I do have Scrivener 3, so I might as well give it a fair crack of the whip. :)

I'll say this about Scrivener. I appreciate that they're not trying to rent it to me the way so much other software does. There's a lot of other online options that try to get you to pay $5 a month or whatever, and that's just not going to happen. I'd rather pay $50 straight up and be done.

(edit: I'm not saying Scrivener is online. A lot of its contemporaries are though. I think that's done just so they can cut you off.)

    Hey @SlayerC79 ,
How good is this program for one who is starting to write a novel? Just curious. Thanks!

    Hello. :)

I would definitely say that it's the best pieces of software out there for writing a novel, a script, etc.

The best thing about Scrivener is that no two people use it the same way. It's kinda like a rubix cub of software, in that no two people make the same twists and turns.

    I'd highly recommend it. :)

I have been extremely busy for the past few months, so I haven't used the third edition. But the previous edition was extraordinary. The folders and finders and places that you can put research, etc, it's like having a cyber file cabinet. It blows Word out of the water.

... so, a cuddly little thing that will one day grow to be a writing program?
