Hi all! Towards the end of my book (dark and scientific Sci-fi), the band of "heroes" is getting ready for the climax, where they will raid the "thing" (never mind what it is exactly) that is threatening the world, using all sorts of "mission impossible" tricks in order to do it. Great. Only... That it isn't... Up to that point, my book is personal and philosophical. It is a thriller, but it's not an action thriller. It's very personal on the one hand, but on the other, the threat in it is global, and I'm having trouble reconciling between the two. Any thoughts or references of stories that involved a larger-than-life resolution (AKA - saving the world), but that was also somehow a more personal, character-focused story? Thanks.
Only thing that comes to mind this early in the morning—if they're going to suddenly be technological and gymnastic badasses, you might want to pepper that throughout the story so it doesn't just come in out of left field. You know, characters light cigarettes with their feet just to stay in practice etc.
Look to the classics for inspiration. "The Return of the Jedi" culminates in an action-packed "save the world" assault (We've had one Death Star, yes, but what about second Death Star?), but it cuts back and forth between the fight and Luke's character-focused showdown with Vader and the Emperor. The emotional struggle there mirrors the physical struggle the rest of the Rebels are involved in. The two main arcs of the rebellion's fight against the Empire and Luke's growth/Vader's redemption come to a close together, ending with the destruction of both the Empire's main weapon and its leader.
Im writing a sci fi coming of age with a twist for the world saving part. Very character based as well. I think that's just a style some writers have. To me, it makes plot way more engaging when the characters are fleshed out. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just switch to action mode and dialog. Just because your story is character based doesn't mean the action will fall flat. Just the opposite.
No no... It's not sudden, but it does feel like a lot more than what happened till that point. Just worried about the change in tone due to the ratio between action/introspective downtime.
