@Homer Potvin, best way to test the tenderness of macaroni? It’s small and hard to get ahold of.

Eat it and see how firm it is. Sounds stupid, but that's what I do. Also, the directions on the packages for al dente cooking times are usually marvelously accurate.

General rule is 6-7 mins for long, thinner pasta. 10-11 for long thicker pasta. 10 mins for penne. 14 for rigatoni. 16-17 for ribbon (lasagna) noodles. If you're putting the pasta in a soup--like pastene, dittalini, orzo--you want to cook that on the side and add it when serving. Otherwise, it will absord all the liquid and turn the soup into a chop suey sludge, which does have a certain charm, but usually isn't what you're going for.

I worked in one Italian joint that sold something like 150# of pasta a night. We'd par cook it and store it in giant, rubbermaid style cambros. One full walkin cooler just for pasta with two Oompah-Loompahs whose only job was to cook pasta from 10am-10pm, 7 days a week. So much food... it was enough to make you go blind.

I'm thinking of decorating my stop sign. I live on a corner lot of a busy street. The stop sign isn't technically in my yard--the city owns however many inches from the sidewalk--but I have to mow, weed whack, and hose it down, so I'm considering it my personal stop sign. Thinking I might hang some lights or bird-feeders or some other random shit on it. Kind of make it a memorable stop sign among the soporific multitude, you know? City is more than welcome to come down and make me un-decorate it if somebody complains.

In the country, there is always someone to shoot them up. Down on the river there used to be a sign that said, "Target shooting in this area forbidden." Yep, shot full of holes. Considering this and your post, I wonder if I should hang something like giant earrings in these piercings.

If you get to decorate a stop sign and it doesn't yet have another sign underneath it reading 'Hammertime', I don't know what the hell you're doing with your life.

Today I'm saying a prayer for the departed soul of Wladimir Köppen, famous climatologist. His namesake classification system is a lifesaver for me when it comes to worldbuilding.

Are you trying to write a fictional setting but haven't gotten beyond "it's cold" or "it's dry" or "it's by some mountains" or "it's on the coast", and need to flesh out the details? Starting with just a few vague parameters you can quickly figure out the Köppen classification and it'll tell you the rest, like plausible average summer/winter temps, precipitation, and so on. And from there it's easy to figure out things like flora/fauna.

Suppose it doesn't apply if you aren't worried about keeping things vaguely realistic and Earth-like. Or if you just aren't as obsessive about details as I am.

I've been trying to trace the regional distribution of the word "ope," as in "ope, sorry about that." Everywhere I look links the word solely to the Midwest, which is weird because I've been saying it my whole life and I've never been to the Midwest. I've never paid attention to whether anyone says it around me; was I a Midwesterner in a previous life, or is it more widely distributed than the internet would have you believe? I'm extremely curious about this.
