NOTHING! Because who can stand to read and write at the same time?!

Did I give my MCs the right meds?

Discussion in 'Research' started by Gravy, Aug 3, 2021.

Sorry about posting again, but I need to double-check something before I write more of my story.

So, my MC has Cyclothymic Disorder and I was having trouble nailing down what meds he would have to take. Because it’s still a mood disorder, but it is not as severe as your typical Bipolar 1 or 2. I have read on forums that some people with this disorder take anti-depressants and I believe anti-convulsants that are sometimes used for epilepsy. But I am not a pharmacy whiz, so I do not exactly how these meds help. also, I looked it up on Mayo Clinic and a few other medical sites and they say that mood stabilizers help-aka Lithium.

Which is what I initially decided to give my character on first draft. But I wanted to make sure that I am on the right path. Because I know it’s possible that he may have more meds than that, but I don’t know enough to feel confident knowing t what mixes and what doesn’t. I know that this is fiction, but this character needs a way to feel better.

So, is it at all realistic he currently only takes lithium?

And because the story happened, he ends up off his meds three times. He’s trying really hard, but the story is actually messing with his plans. So, how long would it be until symptoms flare up again. The reason he’s off his meds three times is because his magic powers cause his whole body to reset back to square 1. So, the lithium is no longer in his system.

Lol, I just asked you on the other thread if you worked in the medical industry, and now I see your med thread.

I'm not a doctor, nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night (or play one on TV), but I have been binge-watching House. Only 3 more seasons to go (and reading 3 books—the psychology and philosophy of the show and a general behind-the-scenes sort of thing).

But all that's neither here nor there. However, I did have a friend who suffered from bipolar disorder back when it was called manic depression, and he was prescribed thorazine (ep?) along with his lithium. I have no idea if that would be done for your (your character's) disorder. Just throwing it out there to see if it might stick. The research ball's in your court now.

Haha, thanks. It really meant a lot. Anyway, I wish I knew more about medications and all that. It would really help my stories, so if anyone wants to point me in the proper direction, it would be appreciated.

Hehe, I am glad you had fun. I have been watching too much Kitchen Nightrmare lately.

Thank you for this information. I looked up the other drug and it's an antipsychotic, so by my guess, he had Bipolar 1? Because that's when you hit true mania and start to lose touch with reality. The thing about what my character has is that my MC hits hypomania and then ends up hitting a general depression. So, not quite Major Depression, but a good example I heard of was like Eeyore's general blues.

But on further research, it seems much more drastic than that, which I think I have nailed down. But anyway, I hope I can pull this off in my story. I have tried a variety of different disorders and Bipolar ones are the bane of my writing existence. Because it just is. XD

Yep. That's the one. I didn't know there were other kinds. so you know more about this than I do. However I've known a few other people with bipolar, and they were the same as my friend. Must've all had type 1. And they all had a tendency not to take their meds.

Hehe, maybe. It's possible they had Bipolar 2, which is also slightly different. But anyway, it's good to know for writing that it's common for people with this illness to go off their meds. My MC is trying so hard, but the plot just keeps resetting him. :(
