THIS BUD'S FOR YOU! (ALL OF YOU) And what the hell, a round on the house for everybody too (the ones who imbibe). Cheers!!
As a newer mod, this for me has been the most interesting--albeit challenging--part. Dealing with the riffraff and distractions is whatever... you just smack them and move on. But trying to grow the forum while still retaining its quirkiness and familial glue is something else. Identity is very tough to come by. It takes years to build and channel. And oftentimes it's nothing like what you intended it to be in the first place. I haven't been around forever, but watching the culture of WF change over the last few years has been pretty fucking cool to experience. When I first joined in 2017 there were a lot of cliques and conflicting agendas. Now it seems like just about everyone is pulling in the right direction.
Ouch. Reading that thread, it looks like 2017 vintage WF was a very different beast to 2021 WF. If that's the case, the previous mod team are to be congratulated on changing WF's culture. Also interesting to see how many people in that thread are now banned... hopefully, this one won't go the same way!
So would my husband, but I had to ask. So be it. Amicitia semper prodest, amor et nocet. Sigh. I love Latin. I wish I could actually read it instead of making semi-educated guesses and quoting famous phrases. It was my favorite part of my legal assistant education.
I'm old enough to have taken Latin in high school ("Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres"), and the Latinisms were my favorite part of law school. Nice to have phrases like eusdem generis and res judicata and res ipsa loquitur to toss around.
My daughter lived in downtown Denver several years ago. One day while returning to her place from the library, I was accosted with some verbal aggression by an individual who thought I should have a cup of coffee with him, my treat. I kept walking. He followed me, asking what was wrong with me, did I think I was better than he was? He finally stepped in front of me and said, "You don't speaka da English or what?" I put on my best narrow-eyed stare (inherited from my father) and snarled, "Cucumis melo var reticulatus! Ipomoea batatas!" He moved out of my way. Latin courtesy of an ag class I took: Vegetables, Spring Semester, 1976. I called him a melon and an Irish potato. And to think I had been so irritated at having to learn the Latin nomenclature for vegetables. One never knows what's going to be relevant. Oh, dear. Am I off topic? Mea culpa, but I had help.
I haven't been around much since June and caught this thread today for the first time. I'm glad to see it. I've joined a couple of Facebook fan pages lately and it's depressing how frequently some members belittle others for asking questions they don't think are important or take threads off onto irrelevant socio-political tangents. I don't know if it's the done thing for Facebook page admins to police comments like that; if so, it's not being done. I was kind of worried I'd get back to WF and find it had gone to the hounds as well. Thank God, no.
