hello. I've been thinking about this for a long time. In your opinion, is it better to write a novel in the office or in software? Do you write novels from a computer or write it in the office?
I think this depends a lot on personal preference and where you get things done. What is most important is not the software you use or the pen, but with which tools you get the most writing finished. So I would say, get started with what you are most comfortable with and see how it goes, if it's slow, then switch.
I guess it depends on the writer and the circumstances. I like sitting outside under the lapa to write in my spare time, on my laptop, or if I have an idea I have my GDrive docs open and pinned on my browser on my work laptop, easily accessible for a quick jot.
Are you talking about the writing or the typing? I do most of my idea-generating, which is what I consider to be the actual writing, when I'm out and about in the greater world at large or while doing some mindless repetitive task like mowing the lawn or washing dishes. And then as soon as I can I get into the studio (what I guess your'e calling the office) and type the ideas up before I forget them. Then of course as I'm developing all that stuff I do some of the writing there in the studio, as well as the typing.
I prefer to write and do major editing with pen and paper. Usually at my desk or in a comfortable chair. Everything gets entered into the computer (Word).
I write my novels in a house, I write my novels with a mouse. I peck and poke with my index finger On my ipad, phone, or my computer Do i use Office, yes i do Do i have an office? One or two. I write at home, i write at work I write watching tv, while holding a fork. I write with software, Anything, anywhere I do not like green eggs and ham I do not like them, Sam I Am. (I miiiiiiiiiight be a tad buzzed at the momentk)
I use a word processor and a laptop. If I hand wrote anything it would be a pain in ass to try and decipher what the hell I wrote, since I have terrible penmanship.
I use Word on a laptop in hotel cafes. For screenplays I use Movie Magic Screenwriter. Fun note: I once wrote half of my novel while working a temp job in a mail room. There was a computer on my desk that had been dumped there and wasn't actually for me to use. But I got it going, had word open, and saved to a thumb drive. I left the monitor turned off and whenever no one was looking I'd type my thoughts on the keyboard and save. I did that for 3 years.
I have a Discord server for each of my stories. I make a new channel for every new chapter. However,take note that there is a message size limit there of 2000 and that you might need to make multiple messages for a whole chapter. My chapters tend to be fairly small,though. You should also lock the channels to not allow others to overwhelm the chapter with messages(You may also delete them after some time,but there is a risk of spam,so I recommend not allowing comments.). You may make a separate one where people can talk. You can set the permissions for everyone to not be able to write anything at the chapter and just modify them for the talk channel. My writing locations are in clear stages. All rough ideas, sketches, organizing, etc go down in a notebook. I think this is really important to talk about because I hear a lot of people talking about developing ideas. Most of my ideas never leave the notebook and probably never will. Putting them down here makes them permanent, and if the idea keeps nagging at me later, I’ll go back and flesh it out later. When an idea has enough flesh to survive outside the notebook, I’ll start writing a first draft. I’m currently using an app called Writer for first drafts. I can work on separate chapters, character notes, etc, and the app does a decent job of keeping it organized For me. Every few thousand words, I will start to write my second draft on Word. This is where I start analyzing grammar and word choice, as well as cutting words, sentences, and paragraphs. From there, it depends on the formatting requirements for different submissions.

I keep mine on a Google Doc on my Google Drive. It is not the best text editor program out there but the ease of being able to log in and write from pretty much any internet-connected device keeps me using it. For serious work, I like a pencil (.7 Mechanical) and paper. There is just something I find magical about graphite and paper...when I am done I type what I have written and store it on the drive.
I originally just wrote in word, but a few years ago I made the switch to cloud writing software, because I write at different places on different computers, and I was running into a versioning problem. I started with Novlr, which was fine although light on features, and used that for about a year and a half until it became so painfully slow to switch works or look at word counts that I had to switch. I moved over to Dabblewriter, mostly because they had a pretty good card based outlining system. Since then that's what I've been using and I'm pretty happy with it.
I love writing in notebooks, but I can type so fast I hardly ever do so. Any time I do serious writing it's at a desk, and invariably there is a computer available.
Anywhere and anyhow I can if the mood strikes me. I even ask for pen and paper from people if I do not have anything with me, write on receipts or anything I can find. In the past I have found finding the right ‘time and place’ is basically just an excuse not to write. For me it more or less triggering the ‘mood’ to write … which usually comes about by reading/thinking about something hat intrigues me.
