How Do You Guys Name a Crystal?

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by vintage_fairy, Sep 17, 2021.

For my story, I'm stumped on naming a power gem that is trapped inside of my character, Safiya's body, but she doesn't know or isn't aware of it yet until later on in the story. The stone is a peanut-sized smoot transparent dark rose crystal, which is given a spherical shape. The crystal was formed in the cosmos and was hidden deep into the Earth until it was discovered by the first Queen of Nyika, Adia, and her lioness companion and had united the tribes of Nyika into a glorious, prosperous empire and soon, her descendants now carry it within themselves until they use it for battle.

Just pick a name I guess. Something that sounds like it would fit into your world. Is there a specific scheme or nomeclature associated with crystals?

How many of them are they? Is it reddish color? Crystals typically aren't spherical, in my mind.

There's one crystal, which will be in a form of a tear, and yes, it's a reddish color.

one of the largest diamonds ever discovered is named "The 26th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union" so I think you can pretty much do whatever you want

The Pink Panther was actually the name of a huge diamond being sought after in the 1st Inspector Clouseau movie. The cartoon character that was in the title credits went on to worldwide fame and had a long successful run, and most people today have no idea what the actual Pink Panther was. I hope in some way this can be considered relevant. Maybe somewhat? No?

You might try names from mythology or names of constellations or nebulae. Just google for lists of these things and see if any of them appeal. Maybe something unexpected, like mythological monsters rather than goddesses or maidens.

If you're naming that specific one crystal , you can name it whatever you want. There are no conventions, except the ones you established yourself.

But if you're talking about the scientific naming convention for a whole mineral class, or a specific element, or any distinct kind of matter at all, just take a look at the Periodic table (the whole Chemistry topic is also a good source of inspiration). Names ending in -ite or -ine (or containing at least one y letter :D) seems to be associated quite well with anything crystalline.

This was my thought as well. My approach would be, if it is just a single crystal, to make up whatever you want. Beskar, the Mandalorian steel in the Star Wars Universe, is a completely made up word (I think).

If it were multiple crystals, my approach would be to consider what it looks like and what it's main function or attribute is (you could do this for a single cyrstal too). So based on the color, it's main use, I'd just start putting down possible names that sound good.

Based on what the OP described, I came up with calling it "The Bloodline" but I'm sure with more thought they can come up with something more suitable.

I'm looking through the Periodic table since the names for crystals do end in the names -ite or -ine, but do I have to use existing crystal names for it as well?

It's your story in a fantasy setting. It probably SHOULDN'T be a real crystal. Sanguinine and Sanguinite have either been used in other fiction or are actual (relatively unknown) substances, but are still good choices, but I'd still go with a more singular name since there is only one.

If it only comes into play in battle, you could call it, 'The Battle Stone'.

Bob, you could call it Bob. Everything should be called Bob. I like Bob. Bob is good. Be like Bob.

Or, call it the Crystal of Kate, obviously because Kate is short for Bob.

    Or, less seriously.

Hm, red and droplike? Why not "Blood of Adia"? (Thanks to Stephen1974 above who came up with the name structure X of Y for this.)
