I can't say I prefer Megadeth, but I definitely see Mustaine's powerful influence on everything Metallica did that was great. I think he was totally instrumental in forming their sound and conception. But I love that machine-gun drumming in the early Metallica, which figures so prominently in the Punisher trailer I posted above. What made me watch the show in the first place was the way they linked up the visuals with that drumming, through the actual machine-gun muzzle flashes. So powerful. Megadeth is largely more like some kind of jazz/metal fusion. I like it, but I must say I prefer early Metallica.
Not that I'm a thrash connoisseur, but Kirk Hammett is not that great of a guitar player in my opinion. Because of that I sort of give the edge to Megadeath.
But what about before he came along, when Mustaine was their guitarist? I think after they had to throw Dave out they hired a nice quiet boy to play guitar, one that wasn't a mad dangerous genius of the Mustaine type, so they wouldn't have to deal with the kind of massive ego that goes with that genius.
Here's a part of the VH1 Behind the Music segment about the early days of Metallica. I love this stuff:
No, he really isn't. Particularly next to Hetfield, who's probably the best riff composer of all time, though Toni Iommi might have something to say about that. Marty Friedman is just sick. Mustaine too, but in a different way. They both use a lot of modal expressions that go places you don't expect them to. Hammet is a straight highway running 100 miles through the desert.
Lol in this picture: Hammet looks like Rembrandt from The Warriors (the one who tagged everything with the spraycan), the nice sensitive boy in the gang of badasses. If you click the video it will open on the picture, I just wanted to show that one moment. I guess they didn't want somebody who gets violent when he gets drunk, and loves to get drunk, like Mustaine.
I’m painting in broad strokes here. I’m not extremely familiar with either band. I like hair metal a lot more than thrash. yeah that’s what it was, from what I’ve read anyway.
I'm really looking forward to Monday Night Metal tonight on KSHE-95, the rock station from St. Louis. About 2 hours to go. They're gonna be leaning heavily on both Metallica and Megadeth.
Lol, just ran across these alternative lyrics to Battery, from Master of Puppets: When you use your game boy When you get a new toy Can't just pick it up and play Unless it's got a plug, Then you are out of luck If you can't find some double-A's If you need a flashlight So you can see at night What you want are batteries You like electronics? You don't need no phonics All you need are batteries Buy a pack of sixty, They are something that you need Batteries Batteries If you want your music, And you're about to lose it Cause you cannot play CD's It's okay, don't panic Don't have to get manic Just pop in some batteries I know all about them Where'd I be without them? Man, those things are great, you see? Need them for alarm clocks Making them go "tick-tock," Everyone needs batteries Thank batteries kindly Batteries are good to me Batteries Batteries Oh, 6-, 9-, and 12-volt Giving you a big jolt Lots and lots of energy For when the need rises, They come in all sizes Everywhere from A to D They are in your cell phone Also help your car go It's just too bad that they're not free 10 bucks for a dozen That's a high price cousin But we all need batteries Gee, it would be sucky If batteries would cease to be Batteries Batteries Batteries Batteries

Well, they didn't exactly 'lean heavily' on them, one song by each, but they did play a lot of good music.
Had this song in my head for a a day or so now. Tough to get the right tone down to sing. So many inflections. This one as well, though I'm much better singing it than the other.
It's an honourable feeling having written the official bios for tracks like this...the rabbit hole continues
I remember pretty much every song I've ever listened too. Not like a Mozart or anything, but I remember enough to recognize it. I can tell you where I was at when I first heard it. The first Top-40 song I ever remember was this one. My aunt was driving me to school and it was on the radio. We had just made a right hand turn off Matthews Street. (I'm not kidding about remembering locations.) I remember asking her, "What's your groove thing?" My aunt, she was in high school at the time, became very excited and turned to me with crazy eyes. She was ecstatic. She shouted, "It's your butt!" You know, it's actually a pretty fun song. I haven't heard it in years, and I bet you haven't either. (That guy's dressed like a fly Captain Kangaroo.)
