I talked about this new legal shift with a customer at the store who happens to be one of the local finest. She said the department she works for is expecting a lot of “I had no Idea that was a felony charge” and “warrant for what, what warrant?”

It's kinda neat, when you can make your own audio books, and not have to hire anyone.
Though the downside is, sometimes it stumbles on some words (haven't tried any made
up ones yet.) Though I think it will do the job nicely. :)

When I see someone open carrying I steer clear. You never know if a stranger is crazy, and I am not eager to find out when I see one packing.

    That sounds reasonable enough.

do you see it very often in Southern California? Even in Eastern Washington it seems much rarer than in Idaho.

I've seen it in Nevada and Arizona. Both times the guys looked crazy.

I live in Wyoming where concealed and open carry are both legal. I don't see much reason to open carry sidearms, but there are those that do. I haven't noticed that any of those folks looked any crazier than anyone else, though. Wyoming has been labeled as having a "gun culture," whatever the hell that means. I come from a law enforcement family as well as one that hunts for food, have been around guns all my life, and was range master of my high school rifle team. If that adds up to gun culture, well, okay. My personal feeling is that everyone should learn to shoot even if after learning they never use the skill again. That would reduce the number of people who panic at the sight of a rifle hanging in a locked case.

When I was learning to shoot as a child, my father told me 1) never carry a gun unless you are trained and willing to use it, 2) never point a gun at anything you aren't willing to kill. Occasionally I've come across untrained people (usually from out of state) who were very excited about the idea of getting a pistol for "protection." I quoted my dad's words to them, and in most cases watched the excitement drain away. People don't think things through sometimes; too many movies, maybe. That being said, this is a big state with a lot of uninhabited country. LE response time is 45 minutes in parts of my county. If my horse breaks a leg ten miles from the nearest dirt road, I don't want it to have to wait on the county mounties to take care of it.

One of these was in the town of Pahrump NV where I had spent most of 2004. He regularly hung out at a major intersection with a giant pro-2nd amendment sign. He was often wearing military style fatigues. I drove past him regularly, trying not to make eye contact.

I have debated many who buy into the 'guns make us safer' trope. They seem to be influenced by the image of Matt Dillon facing down the bad guy on main street in a duel following some set of fictional rules. One of these is that the 'good guys with guns' always win. I know of several women who pack a gun in their purses in the false belief they will be able to pull it out in time, when most assaults come with little or no warning.

If you're ever in town, I'll introduce you to a couple of women who got their weapons out in plenty of time and saved themselves, and in one case other people, some trouble.

I'm not sure what you're basing that statement on, but okay. Still, two women who avoided an attack is better than no women who avoided an attack, and I think I'll keep carrying.

You live in urban Southern California. I live in rural Wyoming. What works here may well be irrelevant there.

Actually, the CDC numbers put defensive gun use at between 500K and 3M.
They started counting back in 2013, but don’t regularly publish the results. Naturally the gun control folks say it’s because the real defensive use numbers are so low there’s no real point, but and also as natural, the gun folks say the results don’t get published because they don’t support the gun control narrative.

Either way, we are forging into ‘debate room’ territory, and we most likely could expect a suggestion to move the discussion there from our friendly and most professional mods in the very near future. So, rather than invoke the wrath of mod…

I started a pretty sick gun control thread in the debate room last year. Check it out.

I always carry a 58mm Victorinox Swiss Army Knife. Anyone messes with me and I could cut their finger. They’d need a band-aid, let’s just put it that way!

As is your right! Did you know more pebbles are removed from horses hooves with Swiss Army knives than are killed with assault rifles every year?

Hey, I have one of those. The cover is cracked and the toothpick is missing, but it's still going.

I also keep a hoof pick in my bag. Seriously. And horse cookies, too. Both my horses died last year, but we're picking up a 17 hand mule on Saturday, so I'm getting back in the habit of that kind of carrying, too.

Never mind the gun. All I have to do is hand an assailant my purse and he'll collapse with a herniated back.

Actually I had no idea any number of pebbles were killed by assault rifles, any year! :p

Just wait for that infomercial for knife collectors… you can buy an entire gross of them for $109.99. You’ll have to hurry, the bargain prices are only for a limited time and quantities are extremely limited.
