Did the website get an update of some kind?

Discussion in 'Support & Feedback' started by ps102, Aug 10, 2022.

I use an extension called Nighteye to convert the forum's white style to a black one. It works wonders usually, but all of a sudden today, it seems to fail to convert the background and buttons. Was something changed by the admins?

Dark mode is a game changer for me, my eyes get strain extremely easily, and black backgrounds help quite a bit. So if this can be reversed easily... that'd be nice. If not, it's not the end of the world.

    Thanks!

Update: Nevermind... It's Firefox that got updated and broke the extension for some small websites like WF.org. The forum is fine.

On that note, I would enjoy for a native WF dark mode setting. Probably a newer software thing, though, if at all.

Yeah... I imagine original UI designs were meant to imitate real paper (hence the white background) but the designers forgot how you get blasted with blue light on the face for hours, unlike paper. Dark themes did not exist in the early 2000s, everything was white. And that's even worse when you consider the fact that CRTs were common back then, so you get blasted with radiation too!

Pretty sure there are plenty of dark themes available for XenForo 1 . Be a lot easier for now than a version upgrade.

That'd be nice, it would probably bring in more benefits too. Hope it happens someday.

The thing is that the xen foro 1 generally is no longer supported by Xen Foro, and most of the themes for it are unmaintained, meaning that if we were to try to install one and see a fuq up resulting it wouldn't have the help of either XF developers or the theme developer. We've already got various add ons turned off because they cause site errors, so we don't want to try anything ambitious like installing a new theme - or generally doing anything we don't absolutely have to.

its bit like an engine in an old car held together with grease and wire and bits of coke can...it runs, but if you try to service it you're likely to cause it to fall to bits... so its best to try and baby it along for another few thousand miles without fixing anything thats still functional

Also anyone who's been around for a while will know that daniel is not the most present owner.. he hasnt been online since Jun the 10th, so its not likely this will be his top priority when we do next get hold of him.

I think its fair to say that i was right first time - this won't be happening until/unless we upgrade to Xf2.1

Firefox keeps breaking things, and telling us it's better.

Do they actually expect anyone to believe them?

Firefox is far from great, but you have to admire what its developing company (Mozilla) is doing. They have properly REJECTED what everyone else has embraced just because its the easy way out, that being Google and their monopoly. As far as I'm concerned, all major browsers are basically Chrome clones at this point. They run Chromium underneath, which uses their Blink rendering engine. That's easy to do since Chromium is open-source and well... a good browser. But almost nobody but Google contributes to that source, their real goal was probably to get rid of other engines.

Mozilla is the only one brave enough to keep going. They built a new engine (Quantum) and have improved massively. And doing something like that is quite the gamble, and a whole lot of work, for only 8% market share.

Sure, sometimes, websites don't work perfectly because most developers just test their work on Chromium, knowing that it will work for the vast majority. But it still works quite well for the most part.
