    Character's astrology

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Rzero, Dec 3, 2022.

I don't know if anyone here is this into astrology. I get that most of my readers won't know the difference, but I'd like to get it right for those who do.

One of my characters frequents a pair of astrologers/tarot readers, so some of her signs will come up in dialog during a reading. I don't need her entire natal chart, because I won't be mentioning most of it, but I thought sun, moon and ascending probably. I have some ideas, but I'm unsure. Perhaps someone could tell me if I'm on the right track at least.

The story takes place in a small town in West Texas in 1972. She's a firefighter, so she has to be strong and determined if she's persevered for years as the only female on the team.
She's married to a deputy and has a five-year-old daughter. She loves them both but recently had a months-long affair with a coworker. She came clean and is determined to make her marriage work. Her husband agrees to try, but while trapped for days in a storm with her former lover, she strays again.
She believes whole-heartedly in fate and sees signs from the universe. She also has a great deal of faith in healing crystals as well as predictive astrology, tarot and the like. In other words, she's an open-minded believer in the new age. She's not religious though and doesn't even consider herself particularly spiritual. She believes these things are grounded in science.
Early in the book, they lose their daughter to the same storm. She goes into a deep depression and attempts suicide by pills twice. She's not someone who bounces back or lives easily with grief.

I realize that there are probably plenty of sun/moon/ascendant combinations that would work, but I'm sort of looking for stereotypes and cliches here. I want obvious signs that would account for traits. Most of what I know of astrology, I learned twenty years ago and have largely forgotten since. I've done some brushing up though, and my instinct is that she's an Aries with a Sag moon. I don't know if that's right. I was thinking maybe Pisces ascending, but really, that's where I'm the most lost. What would you suggest for a woman who has faith in the universe but no religion, is capable of straying from a relationship she values and is fiercely determined in her difficult career until defeated by insurmountable grief?

(And if your answer is "astrology is BS," please just skip this question. We're having fun here.)

It is difficult to determine a character's astrological signs based on their personality and characteristics alone, as there are many possible combinations of sun, moon, and ascendant signs that could fit the description you provided. Additionally, astrology is a complex and nuanced field, and it is not always possible to accurately predict a person's traits or behavior based solely on their astrological signs.

With that said, if you are looking for stereotypes and cliches, it is possible that your character could have the following astrological signs:

    • Sun sign: Aries - Aries is known for being strong, determined, and independent, which could fit your character's description as a firefighter and the only woman on the team.
    • Moon sign: Sagittarius - Sagittarius is known for being open-minded and philosophical, which could fit your character's belief in fate and the universe.
    • Ascendant sign: Pisces - Pisces is known for being emotional and intuitive, which could fit your character's experience with grief and depression.
It is important to keep in mind that these astrological signs are only suggestions, and you are free to choose any combination of sun, moon, and ascendant signs that you feel fit your character's personality and characteristics. Ultimately, the most important thing is to create a consistent and believable character, regardless of their astrological signs.

At a very quick glance I found a couple free sites for birth charts. I would say play with date and time of birth till you find something that fits your needs.

I appreciate you doing a quick Google search, but I found these and other sites while researching for hours last night. That's how I got most of the information I have so far. Unfortunately, there are 1700+ combinations. I don't want to play with dates and times for months. I want to write. In fact, the scene is pretty much written. I just need to fill in some blanks. If I can't find an authority on the subject, I'll fake it with what I have.

I'd give her sun in Aries, Aries ascendent, and a Taurus moon because her description reminds me of someone I know. Back in the seventies, I did a lot of astrology the old fashioned way. I still have a pile of books I'd like to hand on to someone who cares about it.

All I know about astrology is I'm a Virgo and EVERYONE who knows anything about astrology says I'm the most Virgo Virgo they've ever met. I guess that's a compliment.

My dog is a Virgo, too. So there's that.

When it comes to signs for my characters, I generally stick to neon.

I've been told I'm the quintessential Sagittarius, which I happen to think is great. Once in high school though, I met my new girlfriend's mother, who used to be the psychic at a renaissance fair. After knowing me for all of a minute, she said with a look of mild disgust, "You're a Sagittarius, aren't you?" She hated me from that minute on.

I don't know too much about astrology but I know the sign can be either water, air, fire or earth. Seems like an interesting character fact considering the profession of the protagonist (firefighter). It sounds like the theme of astrology, fate, etc. is already present in your narrative, so choosing a sign might help in character building but it can also be somewhat limiting.
