My story features the Native American mythical creature known as the Taxti Wau, Omaha for "Deer Woman". However, I've been toying with the idea that males of the species do in fact exist, they're just unheard of in folklore because they're the vast minority due to reasons it's not necessary to get into. Does anyone know what a "Deer Man" would be called in the Omaha language? And for that matter, what the gender neutral term would be? I've tried to look it up online but the best I could find was an incomplete dictionary that didn't give me nearly enough confidence that anything I put together using it would be correct.
I'm not sure that anything could apply since Deer Woman is not a "species" but a spirit. It would kind of be like making male versions of Aphrodite.
That's the resource I mentioned; according to that one it would be Taxti Nu, but taking that at face value felt like relying on google translate given my lack of knowledge about Omaha-Ponca grammar.
Here is a link to an English to Omaha translator: http://omahaponca.unl.edu/english/browse/d?page=3 Deer Man would be: Táqti Nu But there are bigger questions here, you may find some pushback against your ideas if they are interpreted as cultural appropriation.
I would suggest using the Tribal website and find a proper resource. I don't know for sure what that would be but most tribes have one.
