    Social Media

Discussion in 'Marketing' started by J.T. Woody, May 22, 2023.

In terms of social media, I only have a personal Facebook.
When asked to include a link to my social media page for a publication.... does that mean personal or professional?

I rarely post. Primarily share memes or animal videos. But I have it more so to stay in touch with old coworkers and friends.

It would have been perfect if I'd had a professional writers profile.... I could make one, but I wouldn't know how to build a following.

How does one create a professional social media following when all all your writing credits have been short stories?

Create value for your intended audience. This implies an awful lot and probably isn’t all that helpful right now, but it’s true.

There’s no one-size-fits-all. All marketing is a process. For example, social platforms give you masses of data with which you can measure the performance of your efforts. Therefore, all you need to do is make a start, try some things, evaluate their effectiveness, and then amend your approach as necessary. Be a scientist. If what you’ve tried hasn’t worked, then try something different. It’s actually impossible to fail, providing you view ‘failure’ as part of the learning curve. It’s more a marathon than a sprint though.

I don't understand the relevance of all your writing credits being short stories. Help me out: What challenge do you feel this creates?

I dont have anything "shareable" i guess. I have 2 friends who are promoting their books.
They are marketing their books. They are sharing pictures of their meet and greets and book stores with their books in it, and posting when they will be at expos.
The journals im published in already have their promotional materials... aside from sharing their posts, i dont really know where else to go from there.

These are other marketing activities which the author is amplifying via social media. This integration of different activities can be effective.

A brief evaluation might find that meet-n-greets afford quality of interaction with an audience, but perhaps not so much quantity. Whereas social media has greater potential for reach, but is less impactful.

Although the thread is about social media, you can see from this example that SM does not exist in isolation, and that success may require a selection of activities, each playing a particular role in your promotional plan.
As a writer, you’re essentially a content production machine. I would have thought that it would be fairly easy to find snippets that evidence the style and quality of your work?

Whether FB is the best place for them is another matter.

It strikes me that many writers are like inventors who’ve come up with a solution but can’t seem to find a problem for it.

What thoughts have you about your intended reader?
