Good for her! My wife did the same thing like 10 years ago. Decided when she was 40 to become a nurse and did the whole thing while working full time. Your grand-daughter will never have trouble finding work again.

The soft patter of early morning rain on the patio roof; the raucous cacophony of birds awakening; the solid feel of the earth beneath my feet. And all of you.

Up at 5, a 20-minute meditation, a two-mile walk with my wife under the spring sun on the Ice Age Trail, breakfast at our favorite restaurant, an hour working in the garden under the close supervision of the robin nesting above our back-porch light. What more does it take to feel gratitudious? Answer: nothing.

I spent a lot of time this weekend helping my best friend cope with the sudden death of her brother, so I'm taking time to be grateful for the people that I have in my life - and to actually tell them that and to enjoy their company as much as I can. We never know what the next day will bring, so cherish your loved ones and be grateful for them.

Gratidudinous for an invigorating 10-hour solo drive punctuated by snacking on cold pizza supreme and trail mix, followed by a 9-hour recovery sleep in an (admittedly 2-star but clean) motel, followed by a pleasingly hot shower and toweling off under a heat lamp, and an open day (and week) dawning, under a pale but promising Nebraska sky. Oh yeah, and a "so-so" but tolerable complimentary breakfast.

Grateful to be home after a wonderful week in western Nebraska, rolling sandhills, rugged buttes, sere and and sandy badlands, and the gentler stuff between. Grateful that the rain held off and I had nothing but sunshine. Grateful for those trekking poles that made it easier, and kept me upright at least a dozen times.

Thanks Catriona. I nearly reached out to you while staying in Chadron to take you up on the lunch offer, but it simply didn't fit into the short schedule. Perhaps next year. I do envy you living out my dream by living out in those parts.

I figured you had too many plans in too short a time. With any luck at all, I'll still be around next year and we'll give it another try.

Grateful for a nice walk on a cool morning, and that the rain held off while we were in the woods; Sincerely and perhaps overly-sentimentally grateful for the lovebird perched on my shoulder as I write this (and appreciative that he isn't trying to bite my fingers as I type, which he is wont to do); gratitudinous to be still upright, mobile, and sentient.

Grateful for a mild mostly-sunny day; for the sort of good health that is noticeable only by its absence; for a nice cup(s) of coffee and fresh ripe watermelon.

That my tomato plants are covered in green tomatoes. Looking forward to ripe ones.

Another fine day, and another nice walk in the woods; steelcut oatmeal; just the joy of being alive, even when it ain't especially joyous.

The raucous cacophony of birdsong as predawn merges into dawn; after watching and coping with my mother's last two months, I'm grateful that I am still able to live my own life on my own terms, and live day-to-day without assistance; watching our long-neglected back garden come into its own again when we started paying attention.

Grateful for my mother, who insisted that my siblings and I learned to read before we started kindergarten.

A farm near here plants 40 acres of sweet corn. For one day; today; anyone can pick all they want for 15 cents an ear.
They have done this for years. The farm looses money on it; a lot of money. Just their way of giving back to the community.
My brother, nephew and I got a years worth of corn in less than an hour.

A local antique and "stuff" market is held twice a year. In the last quarter day of each market, one man gives the remainder of his stock away free. People swarm into his stall picking stuff up. I found an old piece of framed kimono and paid him what he'd originally asked for it. The good hearted soul was reluctant to accept the money, but the embroidery was a bargain at the asking price. It is in my deep freeze right now but I'm looking forward to taking it out, reframing it, and hanging it on the wall.

A convenient and effective way to kill pests that dine on fabric is to freeze it for a couple of weeks, thaw it out, then freeze it again. I bought a small chest deep freeze specifically for storing out-of-season natural fiber clothing to keep moths from destroying it. The kimono embroidery is silk and there was already a dead fiber-eating moth between the glass and the embroidery. I want to make sure no more hatch.

It kills 'em in food too, and maybe larvae and eggs as well? I'd need to read up on it again to make sure. But it's a recommended treatment before you seal anything up for long term storage.
