Because for the moment, writing is just for fun. If I chose to seek publication, I would then edit my work accordingly to the conventions required.

Full justified text is generally harder to read. Mostly it is used for snaking column layouts, like newspapers or newsletters, where the ragged right in every column makes the overall layout look uneven. The expansion and compression of text to create full justification causes more reading fatigue than the standard left justification, irrespective of whether the adjustments are made in the spacing between characters or a uniform adjustment of the line image.

Full justification is generally combined with smart hyphenation to reduce the stretching and shrinking, but the word breaks are also distracting.

i write in single-spaced 10 pt Times. 12 pt is just too large on my screen. i'll format it for the physical copy when i'm ready to send it out. :p

I'm not sure why i choose the font i use, but i write in Arial Unicode, 10 pts.

I'm also a victim of full justification. I do understand that nobody wants to read such, but while i write, i like it the way it presents itself. When i have completed everything i need (Story wise, not full edit wise), i'll left justify it. Its just a quirk i have for actual writing my novel.

I don't like using Times New Roman for my writing, it feels too much like I'm writing a paper for an English class or something.
I'll use whatever appeals to me when I begin a new story, which is usually Century Gothic, Georgia, or Calibri. I have a tendency to choose fonts that I think look pretty. :p

I generally use Trebuchet MS or Century ic because they are nice rounded off letters and easy to the eye.

    Times New Roman, 12 font.

    That's right, the classic.

I type in a variety - but not Times New Roman size 12. I find Times New Roman boring and a strain on my eyes - but there are variations of Times that I use like Garamond.
Normally it is to do with the genre - sometimes if it is a children's book I use Comic Sans MS, or Tekton.

**sigh** I am in love with Bookman Old Style (12 pt). It is close to Times/Courier in ease of reading but has a better feel to me. ;)

no, only 12 pt is mandated for all mss... and courier is the most universally acceptable font for all but poetry [tnr is standard for that], since tnr is too small and cramped, when having to read pages and pages of it all day, every day...

i've probably said it earlier, but i strongly urge beginning writers to write in the font their mss will be submitted in... that's what pros do... it makes best sense for various reasons...

Thanks for the info, Maia. Until now, I've just used the default font and size (12). . . I saw no reason to change it. But now I guess I'll switch to courier, since that is what publishers prefer/require. *shrug*

Your words should be compelling enough by themselves. Why bother with a fancy font? I guess I'm just boring. I have poor vision, so I prefer a font that's easy to read, especially since I'll read/edit all of my work multiple times before I'm even close to being satisfied.

I use gotham or helvetica. This is just for myself, I don't know how it would be received by publishers so I'll probably never submit work with it.

never use arial [or any other non-serif font] for submitting work to print venues!

arial is, however, the standard for internet submissions...

Always Arial. I cannot stand serif fonts. Times bothers me to no end, which is difficult when I have to write school papers.

Of course, being in graphic design I often find myself using Helvetica or Century Gothic. I don't know.

I often use Arial or something like that so it's easy to see and read what I'm writing.

Times New Roman is the default. If I'm feeling particularly artsy or moved by something I might use another font, Harrington, High Tower, Comic Sans, etc... depending on the story. My stories will never be sent to publishers, so it's about what I want to use.

Times New Roman for the first draft to save my eyes. After that, courier.
