    Plot Twist: Life or Love

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by SerenaYasha, Jul 7, 2011.

OK I have a fortuneteller spirit who has roamed the earth for many years. she teams up with a board rich girl to help to lovers finally admit their feelings for each other.

the thing is other people's fates are intertwined with the couple. if the couple fail to stop being stubborn never admitting feelings the the others will fail too.

the thing is near the end we learn if the couple admit their feelings to each other they will only live a short time but if they never confess they will live on with contempt love lives (not the same as true love)

plus they will be forced to be reincarnated and live their life over again to have the fortuneteller decide their fate again.

**the others would end up together but due to the short life of the couple would be a while for the others compared to if the couple was about to admit feelings and live happily ever after

NOTE: I'm going to have the bored princess want to try an have the happy life with love but the fortuneteller tell her its love or life. most likely it going to be bitersweet but it's to teach the board prinicess to care about poeple

How is this for a plot twist.

    Anything I can Improve?

    Any other Advice?

which to you believe is the best choice:

    1. To find you true love and live a short life with them ( a few days to a year at most)

    or

    2. Live a long time and never know you true love ( full life a 100 years)
~~you would meet a few maybe someone who care for you and you have some feelings but its
~not the same kind as for your true love kinda like contentment

    LOVE or LIFE

kind of pointless if they dont die - kill them off, have them admit there love and have fun with the death bit. A train is usually good.:D

Forgive me, but that sounds like probably one of the most annoying plot twists I've ever read.

It's too forced, sounds fake, and frankly, oh so cliche. You'll have to be one heck of a writer to pull this off.

Watch Love in the Time of Cholera - that's actually a book too. Two lovers were separated by the girl's father. When the guy comes back, the girl rejects him even though she still has feelings for him, because she preferred a stable life over love. The whole thing is very bittersweet and you see the struggle both parties have emotionally and also practically.

But yeh, unless you can pull it off like Love in the Time of Cholera, your plot's gonna be really hard to write either way. If your MCs don't choose love, then the whole story is utterly pointless - because all the way through the readers will have been waiting to see the moment when they can unite and overcome the obstacles. If your MCs do choose love and then die happily, then that's probably the cheesiest ending in history, which would just annoy me, personally. The death bit is what kills it for me (forgive my pun) - because the death thing just makes it, well, pointless - again!

I once watched a VERY good film where the ending completely DESTROYED the whole thing for me. It disappointed me so much precisely because all the way through the film, you're waiting for the lovers to come together. And then they do, for a few days before the guy gets killed! And I just sat there thinking, "WTF!? So what was the point of this movie!!?"

A story concept means nothing. I can tell you now, it has all been done before. What matters is how you write it, the characterization, the flow, the imagery, all of it.

There's no benefit in asking what other people think of the concept! They'll either say,"Sounds great," or, "it sounds like a ripoff of..."

If the idea stirs you, write it. Then ask people what they think of the final story. After they tell you what they don't like about it, revise it, usually several times, until you're happy with it or until you throw up your hands and say the hell with it.

Please read What is Plot Creation and Development?

You need to choose which way you want the story to go, and write it so it works.

For something that seems predictable, the best way is to spend most of the story doing the opposite. They could argue a lot, no hints towards it etc.

And then have it exposed in a glorious manner. A lie detector, a truth serum, a near death experience...

"and then it had finally all made sense, person A hadn't been lying to other people all this time, she had been lying to herself, she now realized..."

On a personal note i think it would be more interesting and powerful if you made the love more that just a relationship. What impact does this have or other people, on the world. What deeper meaning does it show and how does it fit into the overall plot of the book.

At the moment i'd say that is more of ironic than a twist, a twist is something nobody sees coming. So if you can manage to surprise everyone then by all means, go ahead.

    Best of luck

    Kind Regards

Lol yes, I know. But that film - at least in my opinion - wasn't much of a tragedy until suddenly the guy died! (Ok there was another brutal scene that is certainly a tragic scene, but 2 tragic scenes doesn't make a tragedy) I felt like the film made the hero die just because they wanted a sad ending, and for nothing else.

Of course, it was also on personal interpretation - my friend said it was meant to be a film all about the tragedies of war and how civilians were affected by it.

However, when I watched it, I personally felt that it was actually more about how war separates loved ones and the whole point of the story was to reunite the two lovers. The way the film started with the letter, the fact that the whole story revolved partly on the fact that the guy wants to return to his loved one, made the love aspect of it far more important and powerful to me than the effects of war. As in, I didn't care that it was the war that separated them - I just saw that they were separated and want them reunited.

Some people love that film. But for me, it ruined it. Just my opinion though.
