Time to revert to the old site?

Discussion in 'Support & Feedback' started by Steerpike, Oct 1, 2011.

The site is getting progressively worse, I think, with last night and this morning being particularly bad. Error messages when the site fails to load at all (no data), or other errors.

Maybe it is time to revert back to the old site and put the new version on a private server where it can be tweaked until it works better?

Yeah, I get errors maybe 50% of the time when I open pages, and every time I log in. The site also loads much slower (when it loads at all). Probably a cue to leave the site, I guess.

It's been terribly slow and inconsistent for me, too. I've double-posted a couple of times because I couldn't be sure my first post actually got here.

Yeah mine has been really slow too. In vistor messages I sometimes have to log out and then log back in. Also does anyone else have a problem with not being able to find the remember me button when you log in?

The new site doesn't seem to offer significant benefits to counter the disadvantages. Well for me anyway. One of the crucial things is the latest posts section on the right. The old site had a nice system which showed the titles of the ten most recently updated threads in the writing issues subsection. It was a roadmap that kept me orientated to relevant writing related topics. Now I have to continuously click on the new posts button where every second post seems to come from the new members introduction or the lounge. Very haphazard. I hardly come on anymore because of this.

I miss the old forum. There was nothing wrong with it at all . . .

The actual reason for the upgrade wasn't so much to get shiny new features, but rather that the version we were using before was out of date, and Vbulletin were stopping security updates for it.

I must be the only user that is not getting any type of error messages.

I am not experiencing anything of what has been reported in this thread or in others.

sad to say, i've been battling all of the above and were i not a loyal member since the site's spin-off inception, would have given up in frustration by now...

i do miss the old site's set up and features, but realize that due to security reasons, as banzai noted, it had to... i just wish this new one could be made to work!

I have no problems whatsoever, apart from having to sign in every time I come to the site (hardly a hardship) and there are problems this week with the short story contest.

I am using Firefox as my browser - could the problems be browser-dependent?

I just started getting those no data problems when I tried the site ten minutes or so ago. Thought it was my modem until just now, reading this.

I personally never saw any problems with the old forum, but I guess if they weren't giving out security updates for it anymore, a newer thing IS better. But the problems now definitely need to be fixed. None of any of the problems on the old forum seemed to actually BREAK the site. These ones do.

And my god am I sick of the "Leave the page/Stay on this page" dialogs EVERY time I hit the 'Post' button.

The problem is not browser-related. The server is responding very slowly at times. often to the point of unusability.

The new site software is probably only the issue in the sense that it may require different HTTP server configuration. A public web server with significant traffic often requires configuration tuning, e.g the number of worker threads, number of simultaneous connections to accept, and so on. The database also has settings that may require adjustment.

There's no need to dump blame on the forum software itself without real evidence. There are plenty of other possible causes for the slowdown, even to other sites sharing the same leased servers.

I'm new to this site, I registered just a few hours ago.

But unfortunately this site, for me, is just too painful to use. It's not my connection, all other websites are working perfectly fine today.

I'll be back another time to check out this site, but for now there are plenty other writing forums I can look at...

    @calzakk

Unfortunately it took me quite some time to be able to post this message. Just wanted to let you know that this is a new issue here, correlating to an update of the software. The site is well-worth your time, assuming they get these issues resolved (and I have no doubt they will - hopefully soon).

    Take care.

Yeah I have also been struggling with this site these days. Error messages, logging in problems, slowness. It's only happening on this site. so it's not my browser. This is just getting a little bit frustrating.

I am the same as everybody else.

I will continue to come on, but obviously I'm not going to try to do any serious talking until I know I wont be logged off or double post.

Writing Forums is a bit slow since the update. I'll chime in on that.

I dont notice any errors, but then again im responsible and keep my browser clean of cookies and such. A tad slower, but thats to be expected. I love the new interface as well.

    It's not a browser issue.

No, it's not a browser issue. It feels more like a server.

I agree that it's a lot slower and takes awhile to load on my slow internet. I miss the 'unreviewed works' sidebar as well.

I'm new here myself and having the same problems with it. I use other sites that use vbulleton too and have to admit it takes time to get things working fine with it. So I'm not going to let it discourage me from coming back as i know things will get sorted out. Been there at the beginning with updates in the past and patience in the thing to use in these circumstances.

Yes, it is the server. My time zone is about 12 hrs ahead of US time, so usually when I am online there is less traffic and I have no problem. But sometimes when I log in at odd hours, which happens to be high traffic time for this website, I got password error messages and such. The page loading time is generally much slower than the old site, though.
