^Yeah, man. But try to describe the plot of Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest, and it will take you all afternoon. I don't understand how writers can write like that. It's good work, don't get me wrong. But their outlines alone must be 150 pages.
I like smart, complex, highly lean and economical, intelligent plots that do take 150 pages of outline to truly nail. Simple plots are also predictable and if I know what's going to happen, I don't see why I should waste two or three days reading it. Might as well just skip to the last page. That's just me. In terms of the original question, writing quality and story are both important, but if I had to lean one way or the other, I'd say story pips it. You can have an enjoyable story averagely told and it still be that; enjoyable, but I don't believe there's any value in a bad story, no matter how nicely written. Throwing glitter on poo doesn't address the stench.
