That is more like it :) lots of people would not understand this, but I can say I do live and breath football/soccer as well ;) It is such a major part of my life, it is almost scary.

Manchester United, because I'm fond of cliches...

At least I do have some family link to the club, as in my dad's side is from there.

I'm not massively into football, but I like to keep up with what's happening in the Premiership

I have no interest in football myself, but my family all support Sunderland while my husband is an NUFC season ticket-holder, which makes for some interesting (read: tedious) conversations :p

Any thread I start gets deleted, but yet we can have a football thread when there's already a sports thread?

    Nice one moderators...

When I was growing up and first started watching, sports channels here only showed one or two matches a week, and it was almost always Manchester United. Of course now they're almost never shown on basic cable and I have to pay for a premium channel to see them.

That's because there are sports in general, and then there is football ;) It's worth twice all those others combined, and thus deserves its own thread.

Anyway, who pissed on your cornflakes this morning, good sir? Tis only a simple thread. It'll be moved if necessary.

Because everything I post on this feckin website gets deleted. POOF. As if it never existed.

Do you know what it's like when people delete things that you've wrote? It's like writing in chalk on the ground in the street, and some fucker following you around with a powerwasher cleaning the feckin street.

So yes, it's quite clear, not only did someone piss in my cornflakes this morning, they also took a massive dump as well :)

I do indeed. What threads were these? Were they meant to be somewhere else?

If Huddersfield Giants fans could wake up and smell the coffee about the stadium, that'd be great. Because then rather than thinking the sun shines from Ken Davy's arse they would realise that he's taken their shares as well and the 40:40:20 arrangement doesn't exist to the detriment of Huddersfield's professional sports clubs.

If they don't, could they please sod off to Halifax where that kind of stupidity is acceptable.

A fighting win for Hewitt tonight on Rod Laver Arena in front of his home crowd. Raonic seemed tight for most of the match and he'll take the experience from it. Haven't been the biggest fan of Hewitt but there's no doubt he's a fighter.

Massive, massive win. 2-0 down, playing poorly, being passed to ribbons... Then we come back, show character and belief and desire and win 3-2. The performance that hauls us back in to the title race.

I'm distraught for Brentford, played a much better game than you and deserved atleast a point. That decision not to give a free-kick against Alan Lee was a very poor one too.

Brilliant to see a side like Brentford playing that kind of football though, even when coming up against a team like Huddersfield. Playing football the right way. Just a shame Myles Weston was doing everything in his power to kick the ball the wrong way when in on goal.

Your mascot was amusing though, and Jamie McCombe was lucky that he kicked it away from the lino, otherwise that's early shower time.

Not disagreeing. But at the end of the day we scored three and they scored two, despite them being very good and us being appalling for the first 35 minutes and average at best the rest of the time. You don't get promotion when you're playing scintillating football for four or five games a season (such as the half a dozen times we've taken sides for six or seven over the last three years), you get it by showing character in games like that, where you are being poor, where you do go a couple of goals down, where you dig in and fight for the points. And to be fair, we also rattled the woodwork twice through Gary Roberts (who had one of his frustrating games).

And on the Alan Lee point, he got sent off against Notts County for 'use of an elbow' where video evidence showed pretty conclusively that there wasn't any raised arm and that contact was between their lad's head and Lee's shoulder. Yet the FA upheld the red card and a 3-match ban (which cost us against Charlton and Bournemouth). So maybe a bit of cosmic balancing. And I've long said that keepers get far too much protection, so when one does get wrestled over the line and the goal's given there's a bit of justice :p

The Pats/Ravens game was too close. I was screaming like a maniac the last half hour. Even Bill looked dumbfounded after Cudiff missed the field goal.

Guh. Boring Super Bowl this year (no offense, Tess). I hate the Giants (for obvious reasons) and I don't really want to see Brady get a 4th ring, either.

Billy Cundiff + Lee Evans of the Ravens and Kyle Williams of the 49ers should never be allowed on s football field again. These three stooges conspired to bring about the worst of all possible Superbowl matchups. I think it's going to look a lot like today's NFC championship game, except instead of the brilliant San Francisco defense we get the rather miserable New England one. I'd be shocked if the Giants blew it. 49ers should be the Superbowl champions this year

edit: Oh and Tsonga lost. What an awful day for sports :(

True, when you're going for automatic promotion then you need to pull off results like that, it's just that with Huddersfields squad and obvious financial help, i'd like them to atleast try to play like Brentford. In attacking terms anyway. Huddersfield are a very effective team of course, i'd just prefer they went about it differently. I'm from the Sir Brian Clough school of thinking, i'd always want to win it better :p I don't think you'd have pulled anything back at all if not for the goal with Lee, but everyone gets a break some time. Gary Roberts looked excellent, an unsung hero of your side from most people outside of Huddersfield I suspect.

True, I was just gutted for Brentford. They'd turned up and absoloutely destroyed you in terms of attacking play, and all that was put to pay by a referee who didn't spot the most obvious of fouls on the goalkeeper. I agree they have too much protection, but holding him back from jumping and barging the goalkeeper into the net is going a bit too far ;) I suspect Huddersfield should be fine for the Auto's this season though, hopefully you can put a fair few past Leeds when you come up to the Championship. Here's hoping Rhodes is still about for that one :D

In fairness we were utterly, lamentably crap on Saturday. And it's the first time a side has even tried to play us off the park all season (and, in terms of playing football, they managed it). We have the problem that we can't play fast, attacking football like that because 90% of teams come and sit ten men behind the ball. Hence we play better football away from home (ask the same Brentford fans about the 4-0 hammering we gave them at Griffin Park) when teams do come at us. Two years ago we played the best football I've ever seen but we didn't go up off the back of it, just as Brentford won't go up playing that kind of football - at this level being able to grind out the results against sides who do set up the barriers is more important than the football. Charlton don't play the best football in the world, but they grind out results. Sheffield Wednesday are awful to watch, but they're up there. Sheffield United aren't much better. MK Dons probably play the best football of the top 5, but they still know how to grind it out, in part down to having that extra quality but there's also the winning mentality there.

But in the Championship it'd be a different story. Southampton learned how to grind out results last season (including the 13 in a row at the end of the season, which annoyed me no end - go 25 games unbeaten, get a club record points total, finish 8 points ahead of the side immediately behind you and still end up in 3rd! Football really isn't fair), and this season they've been able to express themselves through the likes of Adam Lallana. Given the extra time and space Town would be a very good side at that level, being play-off contenders at least.

So, for the first time a U.S. broadcast station is going to televise a Premier League match. Manchester United v. Chelsea.

OK, Brits, who should I root for and why?

Manchester United. They're at home for a start, and despite slipping up twice recently, they've just begun to find their feet again. Defensively they're very weak, Nemanja Vidic is out and Ferdinand isn't performing to anywhere near his former standard, he hasn't been for going on two years, imo. Despite their defense being a bit of a problem with injuries (Including another one in the Arsenal game) going forwards they're creating alot of chances and should be fine.

Chelsea are all over the place, Torres still isn't firing and a few of their other players simply don't look interested. As has been well documented Luiz is a huge liability if his head isn't in the right place, Bosingwa at right back is a mess defensively and Terry seems to have lost a yard or two of pace (and he didn't have any in the first place) If they come under heavy pressure then Terry and Luiz will have to be at top form to keep United out. Gary Cahill may get the nod over Luiz but it's doubtful unless Luiz picks up an injury.

All depends on which side defend better. Chelsea can find a goal out of nothing, within a ten minute spell they can pick up two or three excellent chances, though United should be on the front foot for most of the game. United v Chelsea is usually an alright game, often the bigger sides facing off can be very dull. Here's hoping it's a cracker.

Oh, and stick $5 on Torres scoring. The odds should be fairly high and considering his big miss the previous season at United the fates may decide that he makes up for it in this game. Could earn yourself $40 back, I know i'm sticking a fiver on it if I hear he's starting. (Which he should be)
