A laptop, with internet connection so I can briefly check facts as they occur to me, and complete silence. My kids are getting fed up with this and don't often oblige.
Something to write with, and something to write on, and my imagination are the basic things I need. But maybe a comfy chair and few distractions if possible, and maybe I'll get up and grab a snack or some tea from time to time. Oh, and probably something to help me research if I need it.
Paper, pen, inspiration. Oh, and it's easier if I'm away from electronic distractions - the computer and Netflicks keep calling out to me.
First and foremost, pen and paper, or laptop. My mood dictates which medium I start with, but I always finish digitally. Personally, I think coffee goes absolutely wonderful with writing. Even writing while in the setting of a local shop. There is just something about it. Coffee goes hand in hand with spoken or written word. A pouch of Drum tobacco and a pack of papers are usually not far from hand either. Music, eh, I can take it or leave it, though I do prefer to write with music playing more than I do not. But it has to be music suited for backrounds listening. I listen to a lot of instrumental music anyways, so most of my everday tastes can suffice, though Jazz is probably the best thing I like to have playing in the backround. Trumpets, coffee, and cigarettes... what more can anyone ask for? Finally, I like to be outside if it is nice. I like to be sitting on the ground where I can feel grass or the earth, somewhere quaint and tranquil. Feel the wind blowing, hear the trees swaying, animals that are awake and near.
Music (depending on my mood), imagination, a laptop or a small note book, I tend to get ideas when working on other projects.
Quiet place, which is why I write during nights. My laptop and internet connection, in case I need to do a bit of research on something. And my USB stick with all my previous chapters, notes and research materials, so I can consult them any time.
A place where nothing will disturb me, my iPad (which has music, apps to write, organize and internet) and something to drink.
A desktop PC with a full fledged QWERTY keyboard, a 21" monitor, and an ADSL connection to the internet just to reach Google Docs or Dropbox (where I store all my stuff safe). A creative crew do develop ideas with would be lovely, but hard to find for me.
Coffee, fags, tea, fags, silence, fags, a goodly dollop of inspiration and one of Mrs Miggins's very best pies.
Something to write on, something to write with, and maybe my vast collection of books to help (though this isn't needed exactly).
I need to consistently be inspired. With the book I'm working on I was inspired by the Song of Ice and Fire series. My world came to life in a matter of weeks. After reading a Storm of Swords my interest for the series faded because of how saturated a Feast for Crows and a Dance with Dragons became with characters and it turned me off. And when I went down to writing, I seriously couldn't come up with anything! I just sat there not knowing what the hell to do. To ignite that inspiration I picked up a lot of different fantasy series, and unfortunately none of them are as good as a Song of Ice and Fire so my "fire" wasn't as strong, however it's at least there.
Laptop. If I'm without, then pen and paper and a flat surface. If I write on paper, it's usually on trams. But I find it easier to write on my laptop - somehow my writing comes out more polished. Music, and time. Night is good for me - no distractions. Comfy seat - usually my bed. As a bonus, something to nibble on and sip
When I'm planning my story, I sit on my bed with music, my notebook, my sketchbook, my dictionary, and my baby name books. When I'm actually writing, I just need a computer and my concentration. I can't stand handwriting stories. I write slowly, so I loose patience with myself and leave out a bunch of stuff because I don't want to take the time to write them down. But I can type almost as fast as I can think, so that works much better.
I need alone time with a nice hot chocolate from Starbucks, as well as pen and paper. I often write my rough drafts in a notebook, and then fix them up on a computer. I have to keep away from the internet or I won't get any writing done at all. Video games, too. Curse you addictive MMOs!
All I need is a computer, preferably with my flash drive with all my stuff on it. Failing that and given a pencil and paper, I'll end up drawing my stories instead. Music? I've been avoiding it recently. I prefer listening to the ambient sounds that would be in the scene I'm writing.
Everyone has been saying music but to me music distracts me from imagining the story i like silence and deep thought of what the next scene will be what the character is doing the colors of the scene small details are important to me and i need complete concentration if im gonna preserve the scene. Ohh and i also like to write on paper instead of typing, feels abit more natural.
Pen & paper or a keyboard are the only things I "need". An iPod & earphones, a comfortable chair and a cup of tea aren't necessary but I prefer to have them.
nothing but my brain, something to write with and on... i can write anytime, anywhere, with/on anything...
The context in which I write well seems to constantly change. Sometimes I write well in a silent, secluded place, but other times inspiration hits me in a loud, friend-filled room. I am at the mercy of my writing fuel.
