I'm new to creative writing and I'm old (50+). So why did I start? I have an hour's drive between where I live and where I work. It's an easy drive down an interstate with low traffic. Over the past weeks and months I've found myself thinking about story ideas and playing out scenes in my mind (yes, I do manage to pay attention to the road also). One evening last summer I decided I would try writing down the ideas I'd been having. The next evening I wrote some more. As time went by I found the work unfolding in interesting and complex ways that surprised me. Now several months and 90,000 words later... I guess I'm a writer!

I'm inexperienced and unpublished, but I'm learning and I'm having fun. Just the other day I discovered an incomplete short story I wrote 30 years ago. It was interesting to read. It contained some good passages but in many ways it's pretty terrible. Still, I regret not spending more time writing during those 30 years between then and now.

    Oh well.

    I write for three reasons:

    1. I play a lot of sports, but I am never the best at any. I have always stride to be the best and in writing I feel like I am the best in my age group at my school or maybe even my area.

    2. I love books that lets you imagine the character as if they were real. I know when I started writing a year ago, this was the main reason why. I wanted to make the characters.

    3. I enjoy making stories. I always played roleplaying games and when it wasn't a rpg game, I found a way to make it one.

At the moment I write because the only career advice I ever received in school was to either be a writer or a journalist. When I was still in school I could literally judge what my mark for a essay would be by how much I enjoyed writing the piece. The more I enjoyed it, the higher the mark would be. Granted, 14 years of OCD has taken a lot out of my imagination, but I'm trying to get back to that point now. At the moment I suck a bit, but I'll get there again.

The thing about writing is that you get to immerse yourself into the story to a point where you almost reach a hypnotic lucidness. As crazy as it might sound, that is what I love the most. Then you get the part where you can play with the words. Many words have the same meaning, but each one will shade the overall meaning with it's own nuance. Writing is awesome. Wish I had more time for it.

    1.What compells you to write?
It can be anything. I could of just gotten an idea in my head or wanted to add something to my story based on my interests (eg. I have a huge interest in animals, especially felines so the main character in one of my stories is an alien who resembles a white tiger, and another character can comunicate with animals (Excuse me if that sounds ridiculous. But I am a comic book writer so its kinda what Im going for :p) another example, one night I was bored and I stumbled upon a documentary about the Area 51 phenomenon on the internet, so I watched that and the next day added the whole 'alien' part of my story and wrote a scene set in Area 51)

    2.Why do you write?
My dream would be for one of my comic characters to become a huge pop culture icon like 'Batman' 'Superman' Or 'The X-Men' (Oh. If only) But that is not necessarily WHY I write. Right now I wouldnt even call myself a good writer to be honest. But I do have a wild imagination, I have fun telling my stories and Im always stoked when Im in a conversation with fellow comic book fans, I'm talking about my story ideas and they're loving them.

3.What makes you write what you write?
Well at the moment Im writing something. But I have like 4 ideas for different stories Id like to do and this is what makes me write them.
First off, my very own comic book universe. I have 5 characters thought up so far, including back stories and a general idea of what I want them to do in throughout this story.
Second, My Batman. I want to write my own Batman series at some point. Staying very true to the whole Batman thing but making a few minor changes (mostly just in the timeline and I have fun messing with villains back stories and origins.) because I've been a Batman fan my entire life and I want to try and write the perfect Batman story for myself, in a way!
Thirdly Id love to do my own crossover stories. (Just for fun) because putting my favorite characters from different comics or even comic universes together can be so much fun.
and fourthly Id like to do my own wild west style story at some point because I always love a good western story and I dont know how the whole 'western' genre ever stopped being cool!
aaand thats all for now :D

4.What Made you decide you liked to write?
When I was a very young boy. I was a part of the whole 'Pokemon' craze. I LOVED everything Pokemon related. Then after the first Pokemon film came out (dont get me wrong, at the time I LOVED it) I wanted to write out how I'd do things abit differently in it and thus, my first every story was written and I knew what I wanted to do!

    What Do You Write?
Comic books! the style is similar to that of scriptwriting. I imagine if I was going to hand everything I write to an artist. How they'd look at it and if they'd know how to show what Im trying to say.

    1) What compels me to write is just the ability to share entire universes with other people and have fun with them (the things that can be thought...blows your mind).

    2) I write because I like making fictional stories and giving people abilities and interesting attributes...I also like to imagine myself in these situations and sometimes dream that I could be in them for real. The great hero, the dastardly villain, the beautiful babe, you can go anywhere and I like to imagine the possibilities.

    3) I write what I write because I want it to be enjoyed. I want people to buy it and think "that was worth my money." or borrow it and think "I hope there's a sequel." etc. I want to do it as a living an become a world famous writer who can help others make stories too. I want people to make a fan wiki for it and then spend ages checking out everything in awe (like me at times I guess...). I want people to respect my ability to write and be vying for the next installment. (I also wouldn't mind a JK Rowling moment where I get to read a chapter of my book with people slack-jawed in awe, clinging to my every word.

    4) I decided that I liked to write when I made a short story for my year 7 English class. My friend read it, said it was pretty good and that she wouldn't mind to read another installment. So, I decided when I was bored one day that I might as well. I gave it to her and she said it was great. Soon after I began to write when I was bored and continued to get praise. That was nice, but it was what that girl did that really got me into writing. She started to ask questions about the characters and caused me to start expanding my story in general. She continued to ask questions and show general interest in my story. I then made a small ten-part series in year 8 that told the story of - and this is completely true - pizza pete and his side kick chocolate chip. Everyone liked that one and I made another, more series action one which also generated genuine interest, with one friend jokingly getting an autograph from me. Their interest in what I created is what made me like writing, and I have to thank them for it.

    5) I write mainly modern fiction and fiction pieces. I like to have settings with wars and mighty Empires vying for power. I also like to play around with time and attempt to make an interesting romance. Not the easiest thing to do.

Writing allows me to create something out of nothing. Its a great feeling to have. When I do manage to create something and feel good about it, I think to myself; that's probably why I was created.

i write because im bored, depressed, happy, creative, i just write.
what makes me write what i write is mostly feelings i want to get out. and insomnia. lol
what made me decide i like writing is just writing short stories when i was a kid. i won a writing contest in 8th grade. 3rd place!
I mostly write about everyday people with everyday problems. teen stuff kinda.

1: I really don't know how to answer that....

2: I have a hard time getting my emotions out, and when i write poetry i use it as a.... outlet of sorts, but short stories... there fun and i like fun.

3: *referencing Q #2* because i cant effectively let out emotions, i create little worlds in my mind and characters... i know i sound crazy but i'm 15 and high school is the worst place for a child to develop their minds... so i write about the worlds i create.

4: 6th grade poetry contest... plain and simple i was the ONLY kid that didn't write about DANCING BLUEBERRIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i'm not joking...

5: Poetry, Short Stories, I'm currently in the makings of a novel... everything really

I write because I have to. Though, more often than not, I struggle to translate my thoughts and ideas into words on paper. But I still write, hoping that someday I'll develop the skill to catch those lines and verses that fleet and dart in my mind.

I just convinced myself I want to be a writer, and while the fear of rejection and humiliation looms large, my sight is set on the prize... that is, to present the colours and shades of my world with all its hue to anyone who's willing to explore, through my writing.

Because I can! Because I enjoy the idea of providing rich and enjoyable text for young children. Because there are so many poor examples of children's books being published.

    To fight ignorance

I have wanted to top myself a few times, and the only reason that has kept me living is the cause to fight the bigots, the ignorants, the indifference -- there is too much wrong with this world for me to shut up.

    1. I really don't know, When I get an idea for a story it's like an itch that can only be satisfied by writing
    2. Sometimes it's the easiest way to express my thoughts and feelings, other times it's to create. Designing and creating things is what I enjoy best and writing allows me to do that.
    3. The freedom of it, when I write I can experience everything and anything I want.
    4. I honestly can't say, I can never remember when I realised I liked writing. I think I've always liked it.
    5. Mostly short stories, either fantasy or romance. That said I have recently become and self-published author and I plan to start writing a novel soon

I write from that special place called "imagination". Everything I have written thus far has been fiction, and I am compelled to write by my kids. They love it when daddy reads to them, and I like to test out my stories on them. They always help me to get past "writer's block".

Because I look at the world through a warped pair of glasses. Example; I see someone standing waiting for the train bitching about how they hate standing in line, how the train is always late with that smirky bitchy look on their face. I turn my head for a moment, and look back and see that someone has bumped this guy onto the tracks and everyone on the platform breaks into applause as the train arrives on time and ends his birching. This to me is reality.. I write because it's the only thing that keeps me sane. What made me decide to write was watching a lobbyiest friend of mine working the Hill. I heard him mention a topic called Lobby Slobby, and I wrote my first comedy peice called "Learning how to Lobby on Capitol Hill.. Wnet something like this... The actual issues you are lobbying for are important in context of how it will reflect on the member being swayed and how it will make them look back home and in the media. In the scheme of things, this is really a very small part of your job. More importantly your success or failure will come down to how much your lobbying firm is willing to contribute to their pact fund and the length of your esophagus... Now, being that this is not to far from the actual truth makes it funny..

I write Tasteless Humor done in High Style...

I Just invented a new word called "birching. It means bitching, but birching not bad.. It's more like ... ahhhh I spelled the damn thing wrong..

I write because I like to be in control of things. Being able to control and create something that people enjoy and may learn from is why I write. I also write because I like the feeling of sitting down, writing, and having story write itself. That awesome moment of brilliance where nothing else in the world matters other the story at hand. Happened to me a couple times, I'm hoping it happens more often...

Why do I write.. Because everyday I see something that is too stupid to be real, but it is... Like take the other day for example. I walk outside and see that the outside of my building is roped off. First thing that goes through my head is that someone jumped. Not the case it was just the window washers. How did my brain percieve this.. I wrote this little short story...

    A Conversation with a Pigeon

I was having a really bad day. So I jumped off the ledge and was making my way toward the ground when this pigeon comes flying up beside me, feverishly flapping his wings to keep up with my descent.

“Hey stupid?” The pigeon yelled out.

Surprised, I looked over at the rat with feathers and replied. “I didn’t know pigeons could talk?”

“Yea, well it’s not like we want people to know those sorts of things.” He said with a smart ass look on his beak. “So, what the hell are you doing?”

I didn’t know what to think. Here I was falling at terminal velocity talking to a fucking pigeon. “Look can’t you just let me die in peace here and leave me alone?”

The pigeon paused for a moment and said, “Naw, can’t do that. Just tell me why you’re trying to fly and I’ll leave you alone.”

“Trying to fly? I yelled out. “Can’t you see I’m trying to kill myself here? I’m putting an end to my misery!”

The pigeon looked sympathetic and replied. “You mind if I eat out your eyeballs after you hit the ground?”

I couldn’t believe it. Here I was negotiating with a fucking pigeon that wanted to eat out my eyeballs after I hit the ground. Figuring that it wouldn’t matter one way or the other, I said; “Sure, go ahead, I’m not going to need them anyway.”

    Then a miracle happened.

“Look.” The pigeon replied. “Your gesture of allowing me to eat your eyeballs has just gotten you one last wish. What will it be?”

What luck I thought a last wish from a ditch hawk who wanted to eat out my eyes and here I was a few seconds away from splattersville.

“Where were you fifteen seconds ago?” I replied.

The pigeon shrugged his wings and said. “Hey pal, take it our leave it, I’m still going to eat out your eyeballs.”

Figuring I had nothing to loose I asked for a million dollars and that my boss would end up in a landfill.

All the Pigeon said was “Granted.” and then he flew off leaving me to finish my ride down.

A few seconds later I was lying on the sidewalk looking up at the sky. I was alive! Something had broken my fall. I could feel a few broken bones, but nothing too serious. I looked down to see what had padded my descent and saw that I had landed smack on top of my fat slob boss whose huge bulk broke my fall and prevented me from splattering across the pavement. As I stared at his lifeless eyes, I realized that it was one part of my wish that had come true.

As the paramedics wheeled me off toward the awaiting ambulance, I looked over and saw the pigeon eating out my bosses eyeballs, he paused for a moment and swallowed part of an optic nerve and gave me a wink. I smiled back and waved good by.

The other part of my wish came true a few months later when I was awarded 1.2 million dollars by the buildings insurance company for not installing locks to the roof top doors to keep people from jumping off the building. I never saw the pigeon again, but I can’t help sitting in the park and talking to the damn things as I feed them bread crumbs.

That's why I write... ( Could also be that my medication is wearing off... )

I write because it is a creative outlet for me. It relieves stress and allows me to explore another world and escape from reality.

    What compells you to write?
I suppose I write because i enjoy it. It is a mean by which i can express myself as well as being an outlet for my creativity. It also helps with stress when everything is just blah
    Why do you write?
I really don't see the different between this and the previous question
What makes you write what you write?
Hmm interesting question, i suppose my Identity makes me write what i write but really it all comes down to my brain deciding what i do.
What Made you decide you liked to write?
Reading, i always read books and am like but what if this happened! that would be so awesome! oh wait that can happen if I write my own book!
    What Do You Write?
Right now I'm working on my first proper piece, I've always dabbled when i was younger but never written anything mentionable. Its science fiction but my latter books will most likely be either that or Fantasy, my two favourite Genre
