I think Masters degrees are useful a) as a 'conversion course' to qualify you for something your first degree didnt achieve (that's why I did mine); b) if you want to get into academia; c) putting off getting a job for another year if you're lucky enough to be able to afford it (kind of why I did mine too). I did my masters in 2005 though, and it looks like fees have risen considerably even since then; I'm thinking I should have started saving for my future kids' education a long time ago!

I'm working on my BA right now. I may get a MA later, if I can afford it. If anything else, I think I'm okay with just a BA to work in a library or a bookstore.

    Biting sarcasm? :)

Personally, I wouldn't be able to discuss college/getting a master's/bachelor's. I always feel this huge sense of disconnect because I dropped out of college myself after landing a job. I don't regret the decision, but it feels really strange when I have yet to meet another person on this board who isn't in/dropped out of/hasn't gone to college.

Well, you have just met her! ;)

I'm 18 and am not in college or ever been. I'm not against it at all, I just don't feel like it's right for me.

By societies standards I'm actually even weirder, in that I work from home. I'm an entrepreneur and sell advertising on my online business I've had since I was 14. I may take some business classes if I ever feel the need to, but right now I'm seeing where my skills take me.

Yes! Yes! Yes! One more story essentially finished, just need to read it a few more times and then I can add it to the pile.

@Still Life: Your waters run deep. You caught my sentence and gave it a whole new meaning! I never looked at myself or my words in this kind of lighting.

How is everyone faring these days?

I've been editing my story, have to get it nice and polished in the chance it catches the interest of an agent. Never realized how hard it would be to get representation. Plenty of these agent bios describe looking for minority and unrepresented voices; hey that's me! Yet I still get the form letter rejection, haha.

Doing reading for the thesis seminar I'm doing. Spending a few hours in a mostly deserted university campus really makes one feel like the last person on Earth.

It creeped even me, a big introvert, out. A part of me was all, "WHERE IS EVERYONE!?"

I just got home from a week in a coastal national park. I'm sunburned, my muscles ache from mountain climbing, and I have a ton of photos to go through.

In other words, an awesome time was had by - me.

Went to a youth group at my new church for the first time last night. When an evening ends with you looking like a supervillain and making jokes about light murdering in your spare time, you know you've had a good night. Irritatingly, though, I got up late for church this morning, and today's the last day to sign up for Strong Church Foundations. I really do make things difficult for myself.

Got my last shift volunteering at the Paralympics today. :( Hoping I get assigned to a stop near the stadium so I can see/hear the closing ceremony!

I'm visiting a sheep farm for the week end and my GPS took me along all these back roads and had me completely freaked because there wasn't a single house or shed as far as the eye could see in any direction, just fields and fields of crops. Finally, I'm somewhere I recognise - phew! But now as I sit here the smell from the manure heap wafts in and I think - lucky it's beautiful out here or I'd never risk the pigs running in front of me on the road!

But you've had an awesome time, right? Wish I'd been able to volunteer at the Olympics/Paralympics rather than being stuck in a shitty job :(

Yeah, it was awesome! :D Got to go into the stadium and see the last hour or so of the closing ceremony as well! And saw the athletes pass by me up close! Admittedly, I only recognised some British swimmers though. Unlucky you didn't get to volunteer, no idea why I did because a lot more experienced people were turned down so I think it was just pure luck if you got selected or not. And at least you have a job, even if it sucks. :p

Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you were being playfully tongue-in-cheek. I'm always missing the bandwagon, and by the time I get back to the conversation it usually has already turned 180 degrees.

Guess I'm cursed from being exposed to LA/Long Beach for too long and reading sarcasm in all the wrong places. This'll teach me.

After 23 years of campaigning, pressuring, lobbying and sheer hard work, the truth about the Hillsborough disaster has finally come out.

I honestly feel like crying. Partly with joy, but also at the tragic reading. Out of 96 people who died, 41 could probably have been saved. And the failures of the police and emergency services were covered up with the help of media and government figures, and a smear campaign against the victims. Tragic and disgusting.

But I do feel like justice for the 96 is a step closer today.

^I watched that live from Commons. It was very touching.

Also, have to say it: David Cameron is one heck of a public speaker.

I don't usually have much good to say about him, but with this he did very well. A full and sincere apology, from both him and Ed Miliband (on behalf of the last government). Now we need to move forward, hold a new inquest, and see if prosecutions can be pursued. This should not have taken 23 years, but we should be glad we're moving forward now.

Wow, I feel like I'm getting a steal of a deal on my new suit. $341 (US) for a fully canvassed wool suit, with custom specified everything (including armhole size), AND a custom shirt. The price even includes shipping. On one hand I feel like it must be too good to be true, but the vendor has outstanding feedback. I've been emailing the proprietor for several days and he seems totally on the level. To put that in perspective, full canvassed suits start on Ebay around $800 and those are made to fit generic sizing.

The tailor has on online shop, is based in Australia, has the suits constructed in China, and then will be shipping them to the USA. What could possibly go wrong here? I have 2 friends who are also getting suits from the same site (theirs will be fused, so $99 cheaper). We have 3 very different body shapes, so I look forward to seeing how it all works out.

Hi, WF! It's awesome to see so many members online recently that I still remember! :) I got bit by the writing bug last week; I'm nearly 7000 words in, and I thought I'd post here to say hello. At my most active on this site, I was going through my longest dry spell of creative writing (a correlation, certainly not a causation in my case) and for a bit I wondered why I was even posting here as I didn't feel much like a writer. I was wondering if writing really was just a "phase" of mine growing up. But, nah. :) It's always gonna be in me; I just really need to find that spark... Yay. I feel like it's my best idea yet, as well. I'm really pleased because I'm comparing themes and strategies in my story with those of authors whom I really admire, which I feel is indicative of strong progression in my maturity as a writer and person in general. Like... I have a direction now that I didn't before. Hooray. :)

Well, this month has so far been a strange one. A real mixture of highs and lows. Just last week I was ill, really really ill, and now this week I feel I'm sorting myself out. I'm volunteering at my local Library, and working in the cafe. Feels like I'm actually doing things. :)

I've had a shitty month. No sleep, trying to pack for a move, and 2 missed deadlines at work (I missed them and our safety net also missed them, but it was ultimately my bad) that cost us around $17,000 of funding. I'm quite certain everything is connected. On the upside I thought of a children's book that I want to write. On the downside I have no idea when I'll get the chance.

I've just been tired lately. I don't mean tired as in sleepy; I mean tired as in.... I'm just run-down. It's been a difficult summer, and a difficult past few months for me, mentally at least.
