    Mind if I sit down?

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by JT Tiger, Nov 30, 2010.

    Hi all,

My name is James and I'm an aspiring writer. Exciting, huh?

I used to write all sorts of short stories a few years ago, but after getting overly critical of my own work I put it all on the back-burner. Well, now it's time to get cracking again.

I've already started to tuck in to the various literary delights this site has to offer and I've been really impressed. It's certainly the best writing forum I've come across to date.

    So, yeah... hi!

Hello James, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Please read How to Use the Review Room before you post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out the RPG forum for improvisational fiction. Also try our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Fantastic advice. I'm sure many people don't realize how posting too much in an online forum can ruin their chances for publication.

Not entirely new... but reborn! Also, an experiment!

Hi! I'm not exactly new, but after a length period of barely posting and spending most of my time lurking the fantasy forums, I should really get a little bit more involved with the community here.

So, what am I writing? I'm currently working on a fantastical novel set in a world quite unlike our own. I've also decided, experimentally, to upload it periodically to a blog, with the intent of getting feedback on the story and world as it progresses. What is interesting? Which characters are catching your eye? Why didn't we find out more about X?

It's called the Nomad Sequence, which can be found here. I think it's something that will interest a few lovers of fantasy. I also can't wait to pick your brains about some ideas I have... so keep your eyes open!

    Thanks.

Welcome to Writing Forums, JT Tiger!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirements. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

Thanks for merging the two threads - I completely forgot I gone done one of these before!

I've been a member for more than 14 days have posted over 20 times. I was also under the impression I had posted two constructive reviews back when I first signed up to the site.... however, I can't seem to get a full post history to check this was the case.
