    Story idea

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by mg357, Feb 1, 2013.

I have this story idea that is based on the love story from the movie titanic.

the woman is part of family who is upper class they dress well, they have lots of money, and she is engaged to be married to a wealthy man who is a big jerk.

She hates her family's life style and wants to break free of it and live her own life on her own terms.

She meets a young man who is a writer and he is very middle class and very ordinary. Some people would even say this man is boring.

The woman falls in love with him and they have a love affair, the story takes place in the modern time frame, but i have a problem that i can not solve where do they meet each other? any and all suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated.

Maybe he is the journalist assigned to cover high-society weddings?

You really need to figure this out. I suggest doing some character development -- write some scenes with each character alone. Follow each of them on a typical day, and see what they do -- work out their personalities and eventually you'll come up with someplace where they both are -- maybe it's a party given by a mutual friend. Maybe one wants to go and the other doesn't. Maybe one is only there to accompany a friend. Maybe they both end up alone at a restaurant and eat at the bar -- one is there alone because he just moved and the other because the dining companion didn't show. Or they both end up taking a sailing class. Or a cooking class. Or maybe they meet in the grocery store.

I think you'll have a better idea as to which type of encounter they might have after you follow each of them through an evening. Follow each one at the end of the day -- are they coming home from work? What are they doing? How are they travelling -- bus, walking, car? What do they do when they arrive at home? Is anyone else there? Are they happy about that? Do they expect anyone at home? How are they greeted? Do they eat dinner? What do they eat? Do they prepare it? Does someone else? Do they order takeout? Or have cereal? What do they do next? Watch tv? Write? What does your writer write about? What type of stuff does he write? Are they looking forward to the weekend? Do they have any plans? (This might tell you where they're going to meet.)

You have only part of a story idea. You - and I do mean you - need to spend more time developing it. Why should anyone else com up with your story for you? Why would you even want them to?

The "one detail" seems a pretty significant part of the story.

    Your story.

Back burner it for a while. Let your subconscious process it. Train yourself to solve these things for yourself.

Right now you have the skeleton of a million different movies. The rich girl, poor boy love story has been done a lot. What makes your story different is the details you create. I could think of seven different scenarios for how they meet, but they would be my scenarios, and if you can't think of a way to make them meet, then I highly doubt you have the rest of the story fleshed out.

Google "meet cute." You'll find some thought-provoking stuff.
