    Good in Math?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Leaka, Jan 6, 2008.

    Are you good in math?

If so can you or you guys help me with some stuff in math.
    I'm having some trouble.
    Thank you.

I can do Leaka, I am fairly good, although I only know up to GCSE maths. What you stuggling with like?

    Okay.
All morning I have been struggling with my last three objectives.
    I do five objectives everday.

    I'm struggling with:

    Multiplying Two Binomials

    Combing Like Terms, Advance

    Probability of independent events

Errrrm, so like what year math are you doing 'cos I have never heard of any of them. You got an axample of any of the questions?

    Multiply binomials:

    (w+2) (w-1)

    Combining Like Terms, advance:

    2xw-4x-xw-5x

    Probability of independent events:
A pencil box contains 5 lead pencils and 3pens. A second pencil box contains 4color pencils and 2markers. One item from each box is chosen at random. What is the probability that a lead pencil from the first box and a color pencil from the second box are selected? Write your answer as a fraction in lowest terms.

Okay, how about combining like terms then?
Cause I'm getting help with the binomials. I'll reply when I'm at the combing like terms okay.

Well in this case, using 2xw-4x-xw-5x as the example it is a case of breaking it down. I mean 2xw-xw=xw. so not you have xw-4x-5x. add the like terms together so it becomes xw-9x. I think that is how you do it. :)

Well, I'll try and talk you through.

    2xw-4x-xw-5x

combine the like terms. the two like terms in this sum are -5x and -4x. So if you combine them you get -9x.

Now, you still have to deal with 2xw and -xw. so you sort that out by taking them away, leaving you with only 1xw, which is shortened to xw.

So your finished sum is xw - 9x.

    This any better?

    Yeah!
I understood it the first time.
It isn't that. The math program I am doing:

    www.aleks.com

    Can be type sensitive sometimes.
    lol!

    I'll try it your way.
    Hope it works.

    Bite your tongue!

Math is a powerful language, once you learn how to use it.

Somewhere in this universe... Is there some reason
I'm good at math, but there's not way I can help you, because I'm somewhere around 2-3 years behind you. :p

    Combining like terms:

A term consists of a product of constants and variables. By convenion, letters low in the alphabet represent constants (which can also be regular numbers like 4 or -2) , and variables are represented by letters high in the alphabet (like w x y or z).

Each variable may be multipled more than once in the same term. The number of times a single variable appears in the same term is the power or exponent of that variable in the term. It is normally written in the exponent form, so:

    xxx is represented as x^3.

Like terms are terms in which each variable is to the same power, so

3*x^2*y^3 and -12*y^3*x^2 are like terms (constants multiplied by x^2*y^3),
but 14*x^2*y^3 and 14*x^3*y^2 are not like terms.

Like terms can be combined by adding the constant multipliers, so:

3xy and -7xy can be combined (added) to make (3-7)xy which reduces to -4xy

Just looked at this and it looks exactly like all my old math books.
the numbers still jump around and I can not understand them.
I am math dyslexic which means numbers jump and never stay looking the same way twice. Do you suppose that is why I always failed or got a C in anything to do with numbers?

Well, as I said, text posts are not the best way to convey this material. Algebraic formulae just don't render well in plain ol' text.

I considered doing it in something friendlier then putting up a screen shot, but that's a lot of work.

numbers and columns of numbers just do not make it from the page to my brain.
letters are no problem but numbers turn upside down or sideways after about 2 min. of looking at them.
My brain is wired wrong I guess.

Actually, we were doing something similar to this earlier. Expanding brackets and then putting the brackets back in and gathering the common numbers etc. It sounds hard but is easy once I see it and know what I'm doing. :p

Hmmm, I'm in honors, but I barely get by. It's mostly because I don't work hard enough in the class, but I have aboslutely no natural talent for math for sure.
