OK, so the Empire of Ardea (working name) from my setting is essentially Middle Byzantine Empire, but with Renaissance technology. I had managed to find materials on military organization etc., but what are good sources for its internal politics, relations, power schemes etc.? So far, I have skimmed through Anthony Kaldellis' Byzantine Republic, and John Haldon's The Empire That Would Not Die also seems to have good overview of the topic, but is there something I had missed?
