Just some useful dates. Governments broke down in the 2040s and the spires were built in the 2050s. AI peaked in the late 2030ss. Exoskeletons, cybernetics, and G-Mods have existed since the late 2020s and have been improved upon since then. Experimental tech is a to broad to tie to a specific date.
Name: Alexander White (AKA Cheshire)
(Rough) Age: 45
This guys armour and built:
But without the silly helmet and this guy's face:
He’s a master of machinery and software. Technology is his thing and hacking his speciality. He does also have combat training but will mostly make use of Experimental Technology to gain the edge.
His right arm is cybernetic, mainly used to port into various forms of machinery, though it also has an Arc-weapon built inside it. Additionally he has a few more standard ports in his neck and along his spinal cord to connect with pieces of machinery and link it directly into his nerve-system. On the centre of his back a small stealth device is installed that he can use to cloak his person with a single thought.
He also makes use of a very complex Multiple A.I. Assembly (MAIA for short), built up of many different A.I. programs that he wrote himself and which work together seamlessly. Some would say it comes dangerously close to obtaining a collective awareness.
Alexander was born with an amazing gift. He understood machines. At age five he was already helping his father fix things in his garage. At age ten hacking the school computers was like a walk in the park and he made a little profit selling answers to tests. He quickly became somewhat of a rebel and things heated up fast. He could get in and out of systems without anyone ever noticing he was there, gaining him the nickname “Cheshire” after the Cheshire Cat. At one point he even started leaving smiles, buried in the data.
It was a game to him. He just couldn’t understand that other people were so bad at it. With governments already feeling their power slip away and lines of morality already blurring, they took him in and made him work for them. He was fascinated with the development of AI and was soon transferred to a special think tank with the specific purpose of developing a real self-sufficient Artificial Intelligence.
In 2038 they’d done it. At the mere age of 20, Alexander had played a crucial role in the programming of the first AI that could learn, think and improve upon itself. It soon became obvious that the program started to grow a contempt for the species that brought it to life and, despite Alexander’s heavy protest, was quickly deleted from all test-servers before it had the chance to get out.
From that moment on, Alexander hated the government. He started passing important information and developments over to Icarus and had his own little side project concerning AI development. Near the beginning of the Nuclear War Alexander started taking on military contracts and worked on the development of Experimental Tech. When the government fell he officially signed on with Icarus and took all of his research with him.
However, as the war progressed he got increasingly annoyed with the dumb grunts that used his technologies with only minimal efficiency, so he decided to take matters into his own hands. In 2040 Alexander confined his research to the evening hours and spend every other waking moment training his body and practiced in the use of his own technology and more conventional weaponry. He enlisted three years later.
He fought on the front lines, specializing in crippling the enemy and cyberwarfare, until conventional warfare became superfluous. When the spires were built he went back to weapon development and even hacked into some of the other corporations for sensitive information, until he was asked to be part of a team of special operatives to fight in the wars.
Name: Jon Waggoner
Jon is old enough to have known a time without the Spires, old enough to have served in the military before the nukes dropped and the old world went to shit.
The former soldier is an extremely capable combatant with almost any type of weaponry and is a formidable hand to hand opponent, although he may find himself at a disadvantage due to age and a refusal to totally embrace human modification.
As he has gotten older, Jon has begun to rely on his wits and guile, learned from years of experience with the military and then as a Corporation Operative in order to get the job done.
Jon has steadfastly refused to embrace the fanaticism around human modification, save from those devices he felt were absolutely necessary.
A neural interface has allowed him greater access to machines and computer guided weaponry operating on the same network and has boosted his hacking capabilities. A heavy bone weave installed when he was still with the military allows him to absorb damage that could be potentially debilitating to a normal man or woman.
Jon was born into a wealthy family and much to the consternation of his Father, joined the military straight out of college. War was coming and the idealistic Jon had wanted to his part.
His idealism dissolved before the dust from the Nukes had settled. As Goverments fell and the world crumbled, Jon stayed with one of the pockets of the military still trying to some good. By the time the Spires were built, Jon felt he had done more than his part for humanity. With a young child and a soon to be divorced wife, the former Major needed to put his family first.
It was the Corporations who held the power and it was they who offered the smartest choice for employment. Jon has been working with Icarus for the better part of twelve years and has gained a reputation as a steadfast and honest Operative with a balanced moral base.
Name: Silas Michel
(Rough) Age: 25
Silas is an excellent lip-reader, as well as having brilliant eyesight allowing him to have a truly accurate aim. His other skills include tracking, hiding and physical flexibility.
After growing up in a world where plants only occasionally appeared on a plate, Silas became fascinated with plants when he found them elsewhere. Eventually, he managed to convince Icarus to provide him with g-mods that would allow him to do what plants did- photosynthesise. He has a layer of algae in his skin which form a symbiotic relationship, he providing water in his skin cells and they providing him energy and a minimal reduction in free radicals due to anti-oxidants they produce.
Silas was only born with one auditory nerve but the constant unrest at his birth made it impossible for him to get the appropriate cybernetics. Much of his young life was full of moving around and hiding from opportunistic gangs due to the fall of the governments at this time.
At 18, Icarus accepted Silas into the company as they needed more research into plants that could survive in the radioactive wastelands with little ill effects to the consumers with the inconsistency of the spires.
However, Silas soon proved himself in tracking people when performing readings out in the wasteland and found tracks detailing the movement of operatives from a rival company, informing the operatives that accompanied him on which direction to take and leading the rest of his group away. Icarus soon saw him as someone who only needs a little training with weapons before he could become a useful asset in dispatching other operatives.
So, so far we have an arrogant old tech-nerd, a loyal veteran and "the new guy". I'm really liking this line-up so far
... You're all going to die. Yep. First post is planned for Tuesday, that should give anyone else that want's to join a chance.
Cool! Could you give any vague hints as to what kind of introduction post we'd have to be writing so we can start thinking on that?
The first episode is a training exercise in VR. There's a reason I put "mobile" on the neural interface in gear. So you shall be meeting in the lobby before being plugged in.
First post is up, though anyone who wants to join still can.
I'll send a the plate to you today, it seems pretty cool!
So, just to be sure, we just met in an actual room and are now proceeding to enter a simulation, right?
Name: Camille Azata (AKA “Kamikaze)
Asian female, 4’11”, 90 pounds, very thin build, minimal body fat. Her eyes are naturally brown, but cybernetic enhancements have given them a glowing blue "angel eye" halo near the retina. Her hair is naturally black and usually kept short, but with wild highlights, such as streaks of red, blue, neon green, hot pink, etc. Her legs have been cybernetically enhanced with a subdermal titanium mesh, designed to reinforce her bones and improve blood flow to her lower body, but makes it look as if she is wearing fishnet stockings all the time. A similar enhancement protects her spine, which has small segmented plates grafted to it.
Speed is Kami’s most valuable skill. She acts on pure instinct and will gleefully charge into suicidal situations, which has earned her the nickname “Kamikaze.” Thinks fast, talks fast, and can’t seem to sit still for five minutes without getting fidgety.
Surprisingly, she has some of the highest marksmanship scores of any operative and an uncanny ability to read trajectories, finding clear paths amidst chaos. Whether she is firing a weapon, dodging a punch, or driving a vehicle, she just gets it.
She is also good with machines -- as in actual mechanical machines, not just computer code. Her hacking skills are slightly above average, but probably considered mediocre for an Icarus operative. She’s more at home with a wrench than a keyboard.
Kami’s gear is tailored to maximize mobility and impact. Motorized wheels hidden in the soles of her boots allow her to skate around at high speed and race through enemy defenses. Her legs and spine are reinforced with a subdermal titanium weave, maximizing agility and minimizing fall damage. Even her eyes are cybernetically-enhanced.
Her weapon of choice is a heavily modified JVX-55 “Javelin,” a prototype railgun stolen from a rival corporation and reverse engineered by Icarus. When firing, its barrel splits into a trio of electrified rails capable of chucking a football-sized projectile into the next county. It is intended to act as a payload delivery device, to be fired in an upward arc, but Kami wields it like an anti-materiel rifle. She's a little girl with a very big gun.
Rear-mounted thrusters counter the weapon’s tremendous recoil, but firing it is still a loud, violent affair... much like Kami herself. She has modified this thruster system by adding a motorcycle-style throttle to the gun’s bipod, flip-down foot pegs near the stock, and small stabilizer fins. It is also adorned with profane scribblings and graffiti, in case anyone ever wonders whose gun it is.
Kami is a child of the apocalypse, born just before the governments fell. She was raised in the radioactive wastelands of Japan, in the shadow of one of the first Spires to be erected. While others flocked to the shining cities, her people chose freedom over safety and stubbornly remained nomads, scraping out a living in the irradiated dirt.
But she barely remembers those quiet early years. Hunger changes people and, by the time Kami was old enough to contribute, the tribe no longer grew its own food or raised animals. They scavenged and raided. By her early teens, they had killed or assimilated all of the easy prey and began raiding closer and closer to the Tokyo Spire.
At age nineteen, she and about a dozen of her friends were captured when a raid went horribly wrong. First came the torture, both psychological and physical. Those who broke were shipped to the labs for use as guinea pigs. The ones who didn’t were fitted with bomb collars and thrown at situations too dangerous for ‘real’ operatives.
After a year, all of her friends were dead, but a steady supply of bandits and raiders continued to flow in. The company even used criminals from its own Spire as cannon fodder. Kami resolved to escape, even if it cost her life. She didn’t mind the work. The rush of staring down death gave her a high, like a drug. But she knew she could get that same high elsewhere by working for a corp that didn't treat her like shit.
Her chance came in 2059, when she spared the life of an enemy operative, who put her in touch with a mole within the company, who eventually organized her extraction from the Tokyo Spire. She was welcomed into Icarus and quickly proved to be a competent operative, if a little unorthodox. Kami has spent the last three years working for Icarus, but only arrived at Gibraltar a few weeks ago. Despite an impeccable record, her blatant disrespect for authority has burned a lot of bridges in Tunis and New Athens.
Well this is strange...
I honestly thought the Role Play section had been scrapped - haven't been online in months! I was extremely disappointed at the time, and now I thought on the off chance I would have a look again and, why, here you all are safe and sound
Are you still accepting characters?
Of course! Where have you been? I was really disappointed when Neon went under.
Excellent, I shall have a brainstorm. I've been working a lot, not done any writing since Neon sadly - never really made an effort to set aside time. So I will be a bit rusty no doubt!
Yeah, there was a bit of a hiccup at the time, making the entire Community Interaction section unavailable, but that was never intentional. Good to have you back!
Oh, I remember that. Not a fun time.
Meh, I'm pretty rusty myself... It's really rather surprising how fast you get out of the flow of writing if you're not careful.
Sorry for late template, I'm sending
Here's my template if you are accepting characters still!
Name: Emma Blue
(Rough) Age: 22
Appearance: Pale face, with some freckles by her nose. Always stands straight, wears a blue cloak, (see below), wears a long sleeve armored blue shirt, which is skin tight, with combat boots and armored skin tight blue pants. Wears two obsidian black arm cuffs, and a black belt with openable cases.
Very smart. Also is a highly skilled gymnast, with barley any unknown attack moves. Has a knack for upgrading holograms to feel and look almost real.
The cloak she wears is big enough to cover her and one other person, and has a upgraded light reflector tech woven within the rare silk, and with the command word "hide me" can render the cloak almost invisible. It will sometimes gleam, like the reflection of glass and like the sun. It changes color depending on her mood and whatever color she wants. Has a set of homing knives clipped to a small belt at her waist, and shoots bullets out of her arm cuffs. Her left arm cuff hides her wrist computer, and it emerges from the cuff upon hearing her speak the words 'Siri' or 'Cortana'
Grew up on one of the wealthiest spire cities, learned to fight at a young age when she almost died from Nackagee poisoning. Found a hidden clove of silkworms, and before died spun her 30 yards of silk. Used it for her cloak. All family is alive, but lives a life of luxury in her home spire, a Life she doesn't want.
Once MrFox is ready and everyone who wants to has made a post, I'll move it along.
