A Matter of Life and Death

Discussion in 'Role Play' started by I.A. By the Barn, Apr 3, 2017.

Life is a bitch, a bigger bitch than you'll ever know.
    Backstory

There are four great beings, ever since the beginning, made by 'the cosmos'. They are Fate, Luck, Life and Death. These four all guard 'the beyond' where souls go when their earthly bodies are spent and all reside in Feasgar, a place separate to Earth, but attached to Limbo, where souls drift before being sent on.

For millennia Life and Death never met, but one day they met over a soul they had both come to claim. Death was captured by Life’s beauty and Life only saw him as a play thing so over a hundred years they argued bitterly, about whether they really loved one another and how to deal with souls, send them onto the beyond with their memories, or reincarnate them and be done with making any more souls.
In this time they did somehow have children. These children are known as the angels, the angels of life and death. Life didn’t care for these children and wanted them to fade like humanity. This is when Death stole away the angels of Death, giving some of his power to them, to protect them, so they would never die. After many years of argument, Death got Life to give the angels of Life effectively immortal lives.
Summary: Death, Life, Fate and Luck live in a place beyond Earth. Death and Life had children together but Life is not compassionate towards anyone, not even her children. Death had to fight to keep them alive and many of these children reside with him.

    So, what's the fuss about?

Both Death and Life have gone missing. While it has only been for a month, the humans of Earth are already starting to see something is up as people are unable to become pregnant and crime rates are rising due to the presence of demons.
The Reaper of Dueller’s Souls (or Tom) has called upon all the other angels and ghosts he could get hold of to find their parents, the book and to reap, bind and destroy all the souls they can.

    Guys,
For those who want to find mum and dad, please meet me in the hall of clocks at six in the morning. We don’t want to wait until mum starts trying to kill souls again, and dad might be doing something stupid like trying to get back with mum. If we don’t find the book soon, limbo will be a battlefield and half the Earth will be in ruins. Ghosts, if you would like to join us, though you owe nothing to neither of them nor the Earth any longer, you may join us as it would aid us in the search for souls
    in limbo.
    Thanks,
    Tom, Reaper of Dueller’s Souls.

Known as guardian angels by humans, these angels can save humans’ souls from Life or Luck, allowing them to continue their current life. They must find the soul while it is still warm, appearing red or purple. However, they can not see this colour and rely on ghosts to help them rescue such souls. This process is known as binding. They have eleven opportunities to save any humans’ life and when these run out, they become mortal and are subject to Life’s cruel ways as they are now basically invisible humans.
By giving up his powers to give the angels life, Death can only reap so many souls a year and so the angels of Death or reapers as they are also known, reap souls from certain humans, depending on how they died. For example, one reaper may only be able to reap and send on souls of humans who died by beheading, while another only by drowning. They can only reap a soul if it is red or purple. They can get hurt by 'fallout' from other scythes if they stand to close to another while they are reaping and will be weak for a while and will be vulnerable to demon attacks. If they are 'killed' they will simply reincarnate after a certain amount of time.
Death and his children try to make sure that all souls are sent on, except for the following: those who believe in reincarnation (Death is very saddened each time), atheists (these souls are destroyed as they believe in no beyond) and agnostics, which turn into the said ghosts. Most ghosts become friends with some type of angel as they are the only ones who can see soul shades. They are vulnerable for a few hours after reaping but after that, neither Death or Life can touch them. Ghosts can’t be killed, hurt or destroyed and are also the only ones visible by certain humans.
    Non-playable
These are souls who have not been claimed by Life for reincarnation or Death for reaping and sending on. They are still loosely attached to the physical world and become corrupted by the fact they can’t fully join it again or let go and journey on to the afterlife. They can severely weaken angels, sometimes to the point they can no longer bind or reap. Ghosts can soothe them, but the soul will be destroyed eventually, rather than going on to be a ghost themselves or the beyond. While in limbo they give out bad impulses, leading to robbery, muggings and sometimes even murder in that area.
And there's the odd human who can see ghosts knocking about... why? Who knows?

    Important terms
In Life’s chambers is the Hall of Clocks, every one of them corresponding to a human life. They are all different and all can be changed after creation, either by Fate, Luck, Life or Death, however, Fate and Luck are the only ones permitted to do so by the cosmos. Clocks are made at the same time as the soul of the person and can be used to find said person by visualisation.
Soul colours are how souls appear to ghosts, they can be grey (alive), red (killed by Life and a disallowed stopping of a clock), purple (their clock has stopped correctly), muted purple or red (a soul in danger of becoming a demon and will not be able to be bound) or blue (a ghost).
The scythes and binding tools used can be simple human objects but must be left behind by someone who has died. Reapers can change jobs but have to have an audience with Fate and Death first.
In Death’s book, the names of humans who have died appear in black and in gold, how. Death then will take a silver pen and write next to it which one of the reapers should take on the task of reaping the soul from its body. Each angel of Death has a scroll on which the task will appear, they will go to the Hall of Clocks, locate the right clock and reap the soul of the deceased.
