    A Mean Spirit

Discussion in 'Writing Prompts' started by G. Anderson, Nov 2, 2016.

    Hi All,

I am writing a novel titled 'The Mean Spirit'. I've been working on this story for years and after five very different drafts, I have finally found the story line that I am happy with. I have a clear idea what The Mean Spirit of my story means, but I thought that it would be fun (and interesting) to hear what you all think of when I say:

    The Mean Spirit

It could be a feeling, a monster, an experience, anything!

    Best,
    G.

Sounds like some God-awful, knock-off, illicit whisky to me.

Haha, I like this though this doesn't occur in my story :)

Perhaps it's because I've been watching too much Supernatural, but I think of a spirit that has unresolved business in our plane of existence and has resorted to maliciousness until it can finally be put to peace.

I'd want such a title to hold some depth. It'd be a bit of a spoiler if the story was flat out about a disgruntled ghost. Suited to something like 'A Christmas Carol' whereby the spirits aren't mean, it's the man alive who's mean-spirited.

e.t.a. spooky—maybe the name of the above poster subconsciously influenced my post!

I imagine the Mean Spirit to be some sort of a catalyser, who brings about "the mean reds" in Truman Capote's novel Breakfast at Tiffany's. Here's the quote:

Holly Golightly: You know those days when you get the mean reds?

Paul Varjak: The mean reds. You mean like the blues?

Holly Golightly: No. The blues are because you're getting fat, and maybe it's been raining too long. You're just sad, that's all. The mean reds are horrible. Suddenly you're afraid, and you don't know what you're afraid of. Do you ever get that feeling?

    Paul Varjak: Sure.

Holly Golightly: Well, when I get it the only thing that does any good is to jump in a cab and go to Tiffany's. Calms me down right away. The quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there. If I could find a real-life place that'd make me feel like Tiffany's, then - then I'd buy some furniture and give the cat a name!

Wow, there are a lot of different associations with this, but I like this very much!

    Thanks! :)

Doesn't get more mean spirited than these evil creatures in the Warp. :D

Haha, I don't know much about these but I will look them up. My 'mean spirit' is a little more abstract though :D

Ah, okay. Well, I am not sure whether that's a good or bad thing, but actually that is closer to the book I am writing :)
