    MC headache

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Mckk, Jun 26, 2011.

I'm changing my MC's name, and basically, I want to create a made-up name that starts with "Josh" - but the full name shouldn't be Joshua. It needs to be something else, less ordinary - for a fantasy novel.

    So, any thoughts???

What's in a name... Joshlyn - because his parents thought he was a girl?

... Then why would you want it to start with Josh? Are other characters going to have similarly ordinary beginnings to their names? Or will they have names like Keputnik and then your MC will just be "Josh"?

Whenever I see questions like this, it just reminds me of Paolini's use of "Eragon" and "Galbatorix" and then "Christine", only in your case, it feels like it's just going to be the other way around.

You know now your making me self concious about my use of the name Rose in one of my stories. Though I suppose I have recently considered making it a nickname. But I have Mazrath, Tazryl, Xamezar, Artemis, and then there is Rose.

In this way I guess I have never put much thought into this aspect of character naming.

Josh is such an ordinary, non-fantasy name. Maybe add a hyphen along with a less ordinary name. So something like Josh-begin, or Josh-baen, etc.

Rose is okay. I mean, in that case, it's kind of... out of place. I'm more worried by the use of "Artemis".

Well I considered renaming her but I could never picture anything other then Artemis. Only named her that because at one point she was a Bounty Hunter of sorts. Artemis was the Goddess of the Hunt and it seemed to make sense. But that was a very early version of her(she's been floating around my head for years now) But try as I might I just can't seem to rename her so I have just kept it.
