    Poppies!

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Kit, Oct 25, 2007.

That time of year is upon us and I was hoping that perhaps some of us could show our support for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal by changing our avatars.

I figure that those who want to (its not compulsory) should change their avatar to a suitable picture of a poppy from the 1st Nov to the 11th Nov. We don't need to have the same picture or anything like that, it may be interesting to try and have different ones in fact.

I'm hoping that this idea will be able to match the success of the week where we all changed our avatars to a picture of us. I've recently seen the same thing done on another forum and think its a really good way of showing support.

Let me know your thoughts on this :)

I have just realised that I didn't really give much of a description on what exactly we'd be supporting here...

Its not a support of the wars that are being fought or have been fought but of the people who have given there lives for us, or who have had their lives affected by either serving with the armed forces or being a dependent of somebody who has. The donations collected by the poppy appeal go towards making ex-service people more comfortable and providing them with the help that they may need. You can read a little about this sort of work on these sites:

    Poppy - Poppy Home Page
    http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/
The Royal British Legion - Can We Help You?

The support that I was talking about is both a support of the poppy appeal itself and a support to all the people that have been involved or affected in some way.

Lol :) I don't mind lol. I was going to suggest from now till the 11th but thought that might be a little too long for some people.

It just shows you really are supportive 'coz you're determined not to forget.

The whole poem goes as follows:

    In Flanders Fields
    by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
    We shall not sleep,
    though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

I did try to put all of the poem into my sig. But even after taking out everything, it proved to be a little impossible due to character limits.
    Thanks for posting it all.
