A viable OS alternative for non-IT folks?

    Exactly. And the more they dumb things down, the harder it is to get anything to install if it hasn't been included in the dumbing down.

    Yes, actually, I did. I've been knee-deep in computers since 1985, did my stint in IT during the 1990s and have used every OS imaginable. I'm not a stranger to computers. I'm surprised you didn't pick up on that when I called it package management instead of 'software centre.' The first version of Linux I used would have made your head spin; it did mine and I was a seasoned UNIX user/sys admin at the time.

    Oh, cool. The package managers are still there too, if you want them. I don't use them much. But the software centers have tons of stuff. Most every day users will find what they need there. More obscure programs, you might end up having to download the tarball and install that way, which is a pain.
