The way I got around it, is to have a lot of 'points' to get to. Different kinds of points, and set them as objectives. The point Character A loves B, the point Character C vows to destroy A, The point C accidentally kills B, The point A loses his mind and goes on a rampage. Everything in between seems so minor then.
Yeah, making more plot based points would make it feel less labourious and would help you think through some of your character development, more, which might make it more interesting because of the involvement.
This, and if you make each of these points significant, it's no longer one big slog from the start to the triumphant/explosive end - it's a journey between major points as amazing as each other for you.

If the start feels boresome for you, I bet my money many readers will somewhat share that feel. So I would go back to plotting. That is what I did with my previous story.
