Anatomy of a ship & crew

Discussion in 'Research' started by Freshpage, Sep 4, 2020.

I've been googling, but just can't seem to find the right resources in english. I used to read quite a bit of novels about life on a ship, but all in dutch, and it's been a while anyway. Could someone possibly send me in the right direction?
I'm writing a chapter where my protagonist spends quite a bit of time on deck and also below deck on a ship (epic fantasy; ship will probably be somewhere 1500-1700's european/english style). I need some ship- and crew terminology and a bit of an idea of where on the ship my characters are going to be.

Any tips will be much appreciated!

Seem to be a few schematics on Pinterest. Like an English Man of War ship.

    Does that help?

Honestly, this is where wiki is pretty friendly.

Ship types throughout time. Choose your type:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ship_types

    General attributes of sailing ships:

    Pretty basic sailing ship positions:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seafarer%27s_professions_and_ranks (Second half more useful probably)

Yarr, there was Captain Pugwash's scurvy crew - Master Bate, Seaman Staines and Roger the Cabin Boy.

(all of which are an urban myth btw, they weren't actually called that - although there was a pirate named Willy)
