    And I quote

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by The inquisitive writer, Jul 27, 2021.

How would you write a character quoting something that another person said?

    For example:

“She always tries to make out that she’s so much better than everyone else. ‘I only ever cook with organic ingredients’ she says. As if everyone can afford that.”

Would you use quotation marks as above, or put the quote in italics (personally I’m not too keen on this).

Would the same method be applied for internal monologue?

Eg; ‘Just let it go’ Daniel had said, but she couldn’t.

You can do it how you want but be consistent with it. If you're going to include a lot of internal monologue and also a lot of quotes, I would use a different convention for each.

I like to use italics for an internal monologue.

"Ok, I'll forgive her," Rachel said, her face like an inscrutable statue. Like hell, I will. I want my revenge and I will have it even if I have to burn down her house.

Single quotation marks for quote within a quote.

I like italics for internal thoughts -- except when I'm in a story that uses italics to identify telepathic communication. Then I use quotation marks even for internal monologue.
